  Pirates! Johnny Depp

  i really liked it (i don't ask a lot in a movie...escapist entertainment's what i'm after).

  i thought johnny depp rocked as the rather swishy, funny pirate captain.

  orlando bloom is turning into quite the attractive young man...after that last scene, i can see him in musketeer garb.. looking forward to the league of extraordinary gentlemen (love sean connery)...heard it's not great, but like i said, escapist entertainment).

  Pratchett - "Small Gods"

  ok - who here has read this book??

  i'm in the middle of it and it's a great sardonic commentary on religion...especially abusive patriarchal religion.... to those of you who have had the misfortune of not being acquainted with terry pratchett...go get it if you like that kind of fiction.

  very similar to douglas adams and some other irreverent and amusing authors.

  Edelman at Brooklyn Bethel?

  did any of you who used to be at bethel know anyone named edelman?

  from kansas...i think there were 2 fleshly brothers, one of whom was in the laundry.

  how fascinating...especially in light of the jw claim that jews considered birthdays "pagan"...an ultra-orthodox (chassidic) website that talks about the importance of jewish birthdays...gee, maybe the wt is wrong.... http://www.chabad.org/calendar/birthday.asp.

  what is a jewish birthday?

  one's jewish birthday is, of course, the date upon which one was born according to the jewish calendar.

  SCARY field service experiences

  sheila mentioned on another thread that she'd been out in service and run across what was evidently a survivalist compound.

  this reminded me of something the sister who studied with me told me.. our hall was "blessed" with a territory that included both rulo, ne (where 3 members of a religious/survivalist/paramilitary cult were tortured and murderd in 1985) and humboldt, ne (teena brandon - "girls don't cry").

  i actually lived only a couple of miles from the place brandon was killed only a year before it happened (didn't know any of those involved).. the sister told me she'd been in service to the place by rulo and actually talked to michael ryan (the leader, now on death row).

  Did you always turn in *all* your donation money?

  i went out in service for the first time at about the same time the "donation arrangement" was put into effect.

  i heard one or two brothers (when they were in 'safe' company) thinking out loud that if the money was really for the "world wide work"...that maybe it would be ok to use some of it, sometimes, to put gas in the car to go out in service (our congregation had some really poor people and our rurals covered 4 or 5 counties and hundreds of square miles).. i was wondering if anyone actually did that?

  i wonder if pioneers who were used to getting a price break kept keeping a percentage??

  Omaha area - suicide?

  i don't know if it's ok to post names on this board, but i've been trying to find out about this for some months and can't (i don't have any 'connections' who are still in).. i heard a very well-known sister (beautiful, wealthy, pioneer, good-looking husband, parts on assemblies) from my old circuit committed suicide some time back.. anybody know anything about it?

  i always admired and, honestly, really envied her, although i didn't know her personally.

  i'm very curious.

  Old literature?

  we're moving, and have a couple of boxes of literature from the late 80's and early 90's in the basement.

  i hate to just throw away books (even jw books), but i'm certainly not going to send it somewhere where it might mislead more people.

  (giving to somebody to store them until the society changes its tune enough for them to be useful?
