Excellent point, Undercover. What has really "got my goat" over the years are the talks downplaying materialism by various elders who for one reason or another are comparatively well off compared to the R&F witnesses. We are made to feel guilty for having anything nice while these guys drive new cars, have new homes built, etc.

"These things aren't wrong in themselves....."
by undercover inanyone else remember those talks about being materialistic?
i can remember when the brother would go on about owning the latest gadgets, new cars, boats and bigger houses.
it seems they always precluded their remarks with, "these things aren't wrong in themselves...." and then would go on to make a big deal about how unspiritual it would be to own these things.

What's Your Opinion Of Charles Taze Russell?
by minimus inthe founder of tbe watchtower has been said to be a good christian man, "the faithful steward", a child molester, "the laodecian messenger", a fraud, and a number of other things.
when you became a witness, charles taze russell might have been downplayed or exalted, depending upon who was talking about him.
what is your opinion of the society's first president??

More international conventions?
by Azalo injust from the bits and pieces i get from my mother it seems like the jws are having international conventions left and right now.
my sister got "chosen" to go to chile.
are they trying to con people into staying by sending them to exotic places?

My take on this is that the Society has always had such an inferiority complex that it gets a real charge out of all the PR possibilities from these assemblies. They also keep the R&F oohing and awwing about the great worldwide work they are a (insignificant) part of.

Jehovah's Witness BURNOUT
by Ray6 init is a continuous circle of meetings, field service, assemblies, studying and no real enjoyment of life.
the teenagers don't want to be at the boring meetings and assemblies and preaching in the hot sun.
the brothers are tired of saying the same thing on the platform and sisters are burned out trying to work, take care of home and kids and spiritual matters and being a perfect stepfordwife.

You are right. There is no way to win in Watchtowerland. Whatever you accomplish, "couldn't you always do more?"

Changing Truth........
by integ ini was at the book study last night and the elder conducting was talking about the old assemblies, like 1935, when rutherford exhorted everyone with an earthly hope to stand up, and half the crowd stood up, then rutherford said "behold the great crowd" or something to that effect, which was a departure to previous doctrine of one distinct class of salvation inheritors.
to which the elder conducting commented "we see here how jehovah has been progressively revealing his truth to the faithful and discreet slave class all through the ages"...he then said "we'll just have to see what changing truth is revealed at our next assembly...i'm sure we are all looking forward to these new truths".
are'nt we all on this forum looking forward to these 3 days of spirtual nourishment?

Yes, I am eagerly waiting for the District Assembly to be over. Then I can get on with the rest of the summer in peace.
Its always humorous to see how many folks don't show for months afterward at the local meetings. Kind of like the "spiritual refreshment" wore them all out. What is even funnier is that most of the regulars and elders will acknowledge this.

How about both Barbie and Ken having their Convention Lapel Cards firmly attached to their dress clothing AT ALL TIMES?!

Three Things Witnesses Will Admit
by metatron inso, the organization never makes any mistakes, the elders are appointed by god, you should attend all the meetings.
because "it's the truth", blah blah, blah.. .
in my experience, as long as you're not too aggressive about it, there are three serious problems in the organization.

Worldygirl,
You made a very good observation. One that is central to Watchtower indoctrination, and is not apparent to those who have been indoctrinated. Sorry if it sounded like I was putting you down, that was not my intention.
I understand how you feel. Sometimes its like living in a bad dream, isn't it?

I have attended some technical schooling 20 years after graduating High School. Yes, it definitely screwed up my life working at dead-end jobs for that long.
What is funny is remembering a part I had in the early 70's at a local assembly portraying an eager JW youth in school resisting the charms of an oily school counselor who was trying to persuade me to attend University after HS. What is ironic is that this later did happen. Except the counselor was in no shape or form oily! Unfortunately, my "role" was true to JW form. Look at what it got me.
My advice to any JW lurkers: Get an education, and get serious about your work. The Society won't be there to support you when your retirement comes.

Worldlygirl,
Very astute of you to notice this point. A sore point for many of us.
