how many of you quit school b/c of the religion?
another question - how many of you did not go on to college / uni b/c of the religion?.
do you regret it?.
Yep, growing up I had always known I wasn't going to college. I did nothing to prepare.... I didn't take the SAT's, I didn't apply for scholarships, and I didn't even try to get into any schools. Back then it was definitely discouraged to go to college for any reason.
Now, then years after high school, I'm actually starting college. I have to take all the beginning courses... English 101, etc. I hope to eventually get a BS in computer science, but it will take a while because I can only attend one or two evening classes per quarter.
Fortunately I turned out pretty well considering I didn't to college (I do computer networks and computer programming). Many of my peers in the organization had much more difficulty finding steady, well-paying work.
I do regret that I didn't go to college. It's my opinion that the organization discourages college so much because those with higher educations tend to be more critical and demand more proof for things they are taught.
recently, dr. wolf-ekkehard loennig, a jw working in a leading position at the gene-science-department at the max-planck-institute, has been banned from the institute's website for spreading his view about evolution.
he promotes the so called "intelligents design".
max-planck-institute calles this creationism in disguise.
As much as I don't like supressing a person because of his viewpoint, JW's are not allowed to have their own viewpoint! This scientist, as long as he is a JW, must NOT believe in evolution. He CANNOT believe in evolution. This disqualifies him from having a valid opinion. He has the society's opinion.
By the way, studying evolution in depth is what finally broke my implicit trust in the society. I could not dismiss all of the evidence of evolution. During my attempts to harmonize JW beliefs with what science has discovered, I ended up re-reading the 1985 creation book VERY CAREFULLY. I started looking up some of the references, and found they were taken out of context. I then found a web site which shows all of the misquotations. I was appalled! My implicit trust was starting to be not so implicit. It continued from there until I no longer had any trust that the society was God's channel. Now I detest them.

Thanks for both replies so far... It would be interesting to see if anyone lives even closer. I have had lots of friends in the past leave the org and it would be great to see some on here.
my son just got a letter from my mother saying how glad she is that he didn't stay in the army.
i told them a month ago that he didn't go to iraq cause he's still in school.
i don't know how to do a link but i posted "phone call from my sister" on april 3rd.
I agree with other people's posts... most DF victims simply go back for social reasons. My sister is one of them. She now admits to me that she only came back to get reinstated, and then slowly faded to inactivity. Now she's free of the cult but doesn't have the DF label. I simply stopped going and didn't tell the elders anything, so I don't believe they will DF me. Unfortunately, a few of my family members are very strict and have stopped associating with me anyway.
This religion is so f'ed up! The brainwashing is what keeps people inside the religion from seeing anything wrong with resorting to shunning and manipulation to try to force someone to come back to the org. It's so easy to see when you're "weak" or on the outside, though!!!
interesting thought.
if we say that jw's, mormons, etc.
are 'cults' because they are not affilated with any 'mainstream' religious organisation, and that their founder is a man who becomes a sort of figurehead, could not the same be said of the organisation founded by christ?
This is interesting. I do not define "cult" as a "non mainstream religion", but I do believe the Bible promotes some cult-like behavior. This web site shows the traits (or rather warning signs) of a cult:
http://www.rickross.com/warningsigns.html
Most of these traits apply to JW's. Most JW's would probably think this list of warning signs is blatantly anti-JW, but it's not! This list is a general description of cults. Of course the JW's define cult in their publications as "a group that follows a human leader" or something to that effect, which they quickly deny by saying God is their leader.
Many cult-ish behavior of the JW's are seemingly justified by the Bible. The Bible is either too easy to manipulate or it simply does promote cult-like behavior.
Oops, hit enter by mistake. Please disregard!

Just for kicks I'm curious if anyone lives in the Tri-Cities. I live in Kennewick and used to attend the South Kennewick and Riverside congregations. Anyone here I might know?
i'm wondering if i should just "come out of the closet" and tell my family i don't believe it anymore and da myself or don't make any noise and fade out?
what are the benefits or problems with either choice?
additionally, some have expressed concern over da.
My wife and I did the "quick fade"... we just stopped going completely and didn't tell the elders shit. The reason I don't want to disassociate myself is because I have family in the organization. I don't have a problem manipulating the system so that I can still talk freely (for the most part) with my family. We have had to offer some explanations to our family members, but it's not a big deal. Both my wife and I left because of problems with the organization and their beliefs, not because we wanted to live some forbidden lifestyle.
I have heard from at least a few sources that if the elders ever ask you "Do you still consider yourself a JW?" you should answer "yes" unless you want to be disassociated. Like I said, I don't mind manipulating the system, at least at this point in the game. (We left about 6 months ago.)
