I initially thought LDS shunned ex members and didn't allow reading anti LDS material. But from what others have said in this thread those things are not true.

KGB, surprising experience. From what you and Rev had said in this thread, I am beginning to think I shouldn't classify the LDS as another cult. The obviously don't share the shunning nature of the JWs.

it's getting on to almost two years since the events of september 11, and it is striking how little we know about what happened: .
we don't know the real names of any of the hijackers.. we don't know what countries they came from.. we don't know who planned and organized the terrorism.. we don't know who financed it.. we have no idea what actually happened at the pentagon (but i know a boeing 757 didn't go through this hole).
normal video tapes of and from the pentagon building, which should have shown what happened, have never been released (except for one, which poses more questions than it answers).
also the tower that was hit on the lower level fell probably first because of the higher weight on the steel structure. therefore less time was required to heat up the steel enough for the structure to collaps.
Agreed. Also, the second tower had more damage to the external supports. The first building was hit head on but the second building was hit at an angle and damaged supports on two sides.

i know many people who don't like cops and even give them all kinds of names.
some may be nice, but many think they are superior to the ordinary citizen.
i see so many doing radar on bottom of hills where automatically you will go over the speed limit.
I've never had a bad experience with a cop. Speed traps are annoying and it may seem like there are more important things a cop should be doing, but speeding and reckless driving can kill. That makes it pretty important.

The problem lies in the fact that they have no backing for these theories from a book they claim is pure
So let me get this straight... if they had backing for their actions/beliefs from one of their books that they claim is pure, it would be ok? Mormons invent a book and since they believe it is pure, their actions based on such a book are noble?
I fully agree that the bible is full of contradictions. I don't believe it is inspired. (Actually I don't even believe in god.) But I'm curious as to why you are able to put so much faith in the BoM when it has been torn apart by critics.

I am surprised that there are ex-JWs here that would almost like to be Mormon. IMO Mormon beliefs are even more "out there" than JW beliefs. The BoM is not backed at all by archaeology, it contradicts the bible in places, and yet according to Mormons it is a "higher source" than the bible.
Don't get me wrong: Mormons are GREAT people. Very nice, loving, even to non-members (unlike the JWs).
If you want to be a Mormon for social reasons, great. But their religious views are really whacked and not based on any sort of fact. (Mainstream Christianity isn't either, I guess, but it's not as bad...)

and they do it well being the fastest growing religion in the world!
I have a hard time imagining they are more effective than JWs in their door-to-door ministry. There are just so many more JWs that knock on doors! I think the LDS church is growing rapidly because they strongly encourage you to have many children. The JWs practically discourage children until the new system.
the first known mention of yahweh outside the bible is from certain inscriptions at khirbet al-qom and kuntillet ajrud, which refer to him by this name, dating from the period of iron age ii (850 bce - mid 9th century).
the kuntillet ajrud inscription is significant as it shows yahweh was not a monotheistic god at this time, as the inscription refers to "yahweh and his asherah" (as his goddess).
asherah, is of course the goddess of the groves, whose sacred trees were destroyed by order of josiah, just before the fall of jerusalem to the egyptians (in which josiah was killed) and immediately after to the babylonian forces of nebuchadnezzar.
