Oxnard, fellow newbie, I am glad to have you posting. I would not try to reason too much with athiests as they think that faith is irrational.
That limits my discussion with them a lot.

this question has probably been asked before, but since i am a newbie, i wouldn't know.. anyway, i would like to ask if you believe in god or a higher power since becoming an ex-jw?.

There are so many different religions of course. I have not studied them, but it seems that the one difference between the Chistian religion and others is that the Christian religion's God is alive and not dead like Mohammad or Buddah. Just an observation and thought...
Having a God that is alive is a big deal to me and why I wouldn't want part of most religions. The jw's seem wrong of course to me about a lot, but no worse or better than any organized religion.

what is it that really irritates you ,i mean the most annoying ,thing that when you see it or hear it you just clench your teeth,we all have them so let's hear yours.mine is religious boasting.there is this home builder that advertises on tv and says his crap then says we are a christien company.oh yes , because he said that i would trust him more then anyone else,he must have higher standards.
(ya right).or those people who advertise with bumper stickers of their religion,and yes the freaking door bell ringers trying to push their crap on me.isn't it what you feel inside?why advertise to everyone?does it make you feel more important or more religious?because of the attempt to show me that you have faith does not make me feel i could trust you.
this is just one of my irritants and hope not do offend,everyone has the right.
People with no tact;
Rudeness;
People lacking compassion
Those are my top 3 I think.

A person really has to take Bradley with a grain of salt. I have learned that. By the way Bradley, I will pick out my own books to read. I don't need assistance and would be leary if someone TOLD me what to read.

it seems people get disfellowshipped for a wide variety of reasons, .
of course the most obvious ones are, sexual, drinking and or drugs.. but, i have seen a few strange ones .......... i remember a brother in our congregation getting df'd because he went to a strip bar, i admit it not the greatest place to hang out, but df'd for this.
it's not illegal.. another got df'd for because the elders felt he was pushing his business too much at the kingdom hall.
I heard of one lady who got df'd because after she legally got a divorce (and within the guidelines of the jw's) but she had to stay over at her ex's house for a couple of weeks after the divorce to get financially able to support herself. I guess she was accused of living with a man she wasn't married to!!

Thanks Larc and Craig!!
That is pretty much what I think. Noone can prove anything or else why would there be a huge debate in the first place?

Aztec,
I actually did buy a book over the weekend called Science and Religion: Are they Compatible? It looks like a great book and I am going to start on it shortly.

Bradley,
Yesterday you said to jump in the discussion even though I didn't want to much. Now I made a post and you change your mind!!!
No, I am not getting into any heavy debates, but just wanted to hear some ideas from the board.

I respect Oxnard's comments very much even though I know that people who believe in a higher power seem ridiculous to the athiests. (did I spell that right Aztec? )
There are theories of course including the intelligent design theory for one. I also know of a couple of others, but can't think of the term for it. One is involving blood colagulation (sp?) and the complexity of it.
I am really trying to be open minded and not rule out either side though at this point.
