Christians should not get involved in a dangerous pastime? Works for me! I have owned and driven motorcycles for 26 years. I never sustained a single injury in this pursuit. But in the field service I had numerous sprained ankles, 3 knee injuries and 1 back injury through slip and fall accidents, resulting in 2 knee surgeries, and much time off work. I eventually had to retrain for another line of work because of these injuries.

I think field service is a very dangerous pastime, and should be avoided at all costs.

And yes, they were constantly on my ass for owning a motorcycle.

what is the stupidest thing a jw ever told you?

we all know that they say a lot of stupid things, but what really topped the cake?.

for me, it was an elder telling me i was progressing really well when my meeting attendance was down and my field service hours were slipping.

The most stupid thing I ever heard from a JW was before I became one. I knew very little about the bible, and since they seemed to back up everything they said from the bible I started to believe them. The brother studying with me said it was no time to get married since the end was so close. He didn't give this system another 2 years! He also said there would be no marriage or sex in the new system.

Being a healthy 19 year old male, I took the matter very seriously, and made it my firm resolve to stop the study and go out and get laid as much as possible while I still could.

Unfortunatley, a few years later I lost all common sense and became a JW anyway.

Preaching Slowdown

i can remember numerous talks and study articles about how the preaching work would get more and more intense as we near the end.. one so called prophetic illustration that stands out in my mind was when joshua and his men marched around the city each day and then just before the city fell they marched seven times signifying a quickening of the preaching work.. it seems starkingly obvious that the preaching,is in decline amonst jw's,the jw's are seen less and less often in my neighbourhood,it is very rare to see them out street witnesing around the town centres and railway stations,the average jw spends far less time preaching than a decade ago.. it seems like their chief brag is definately on the wain,in favour of other recruitment methods.

The last congregation I was associated with had 14 regular pioneers when I moved in yet there were a number of territories (not locked buildings) that hadn't been touched in 2 years. My first congregation covered it's territories about every 3 months. There's definitely a slowdown in the preaching work. Yet they still say the work is speeding up, and that hours worldwide are increasing.

The right age to get baptized?

i've always wondered why it was ok for jesus to wait until he was 29 to get baptized in symbol of his dedication while jw's are pressured at such an early age.

do you suppose joseph was always on his case...jesus get up its time to go to the temple.....why didn't you comment today?.......when are you going stop hanging out in gallilee with all your friends and get baptized?.

is this just another control aspect of the wtbts, handcuff you to the org while your young and make it almost impossible to leave later when you mature?

Considering the practice of shunning and it's severe consequenses such as the loss of the entire personal support network such as family and friends, I don't think baptism should be legally permitted until someone reaches the age of majority. It's almost impossible for a child or teenager to fully understand the reprecussions of deciding that they don't believe in it anymore.

There's definitely less interest in the service. The last time I worked with a circuit overseer in service was about a year and a half ago. After going from door to door for about 20 minutes he wanted to go to a donut shop, where we spent the rest of the morning chatting. In places where I used to always see pioneers doing street witnessing every day, they are never there now. When I last went out in service in January of this year, people started talking about which donut shop we'd go to before we even reached the car right after the service arrangement.

Field service is the last thing on their minds, just coffee and donuts. Hell, I like donuts too, but unlike them, I can go to Tim Hortons without a suit and tie. I think they just go out so they can be seen by the elders, and presumed to be 'spiritual' people.

hello, new member here.. i registered a couple of years ago, but my initial experiences here were not of the warm/fuzzy variety, which must have been what i needed at the time; so, i left.

recenty, a friend gently suggested that i might want to give interacting here a second try.. so's i don't have to type it twice, i offer here a hyperlink to my member profile.. although one might reasonably be named "cruithne" - especially if one is irish or scottish - it is not my real name.

Sometimes Life REALLY RAWKS!!!

we had the power blackout on thursday afternoon, and my weekend is continuing into today!

and it may get longer!!!

i work for the ontario government, and they are taking the lead in energy conservation by having only essential personel come to work.

We had the power blackout on Thursday afternoon, and my weekend is continuing into today! And it may get longer!!! I work for the Ontario government, and they are taking the lead in energy conservation by having only essential personel come to work. So, I just need to check my voicemail from home every morning to find out if I have another day off or not. Actually, I like to think of myself as being pretty essential, but hell, I'm not gonna complain.

So now I'm getting paid to stay home and conserve energy, and that's exactly what I'm going to do. After my morning workout, I'll spend the rest of the day on the internet, on the phone, watching TV, smoking Cuban cigars, drinking good Scotch and maybe some beer too! Our workplace is encouraging us to donate blood today, so I'll probably do that before I get into the Scotch and beer.

I might even order a pizza.

Life is really ROCKING today!

I'm so sorry to hear about that! I don't know what kind of relationship, if any, you've been able to maintain with your daughter, so all I can relate is my own experience.

My father was never a JW, but I didn't invite him to my wedding because he was 'worldly' and very opposed to JW's. He honored my wishes and didn't come, but sent a generous gift via my 'worldly' sister, who was invited.

He never said anything to make me feel guilty afterward, but I began to feel bad anyway. Eventually, I decided to make an effort to improve our relationship.

I sincerely hope she comes to regret the cruelty of shunning, and makes an effort to rebuild her relationship with you.

I think Jehovah and Jehovah's Witnesses serve a very useful purpose. They bring together millions of people worldwide in religious unity. In any such group there are individuals who have outstanding abilities, insights, and are usually damned good looking. These, like cream, rise above the rest, and leave behind the robotic world of Jehovah's Witnesses.

They come here. Where else can you find such awesome people?

They don't make rules, eh? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

How about:

Facial hair on men.
4 door service vehicles.
Mandatory jackets and ties.
Pioneers.
Auxiliary Pioneers.
Bethel.
Circuit, District, city, and zone overseers.
Reporting of field service to elders.
Avoiding 'supplementary' education.
Bible study aids.
Judicial committees.
Telling brothers which hotels they MAY NOT USE. (I know one elder who was deleted because he stayed at a hotel that was not on the society's 'recommended' list during a convention).
5 meetings a week.

And a whole lot more!
