Libraries all over the country are in trouble. They don't generate a lot of revenue which is why libraries are one of the first to get budget cuts. Closing them is not the answer...when the economy goes down, a lot of libraries see an increase in use. But a lot are going to have to cut their hours, cut staff, and cut out services in order to survive. Maybe libraries should have a small charge for certain services they provide, such as public access computers. The trouble is, it's always the poor who will be hurt by this. There are no easy answers. But the bottom line is, we need the libraries to be open, even if on reduced hours and services.

Wasting Time In The Ministry--How Did You Do It??
by minimus ini know of a couple of elders that regularly went out in the ministry throughout the week.
no matter which street they were on, they always seemed to be near the same spot.
someone here talked about the michael jackson moonwalk.

Wasting time???? That was unheard of... I remember going out in frigid cold and the car being locked up so we couldn't sit in it for a few minutes to warm up. In the winter we would have territory on the waterfront and in the summer would have to work inner city areas.
We would be stuffed in the one car (sometimes 10 of us) to go to a territory. (This was in the 60s) My partner and I (we were just kids...10-14 years old) would walk as slowly as we could from house to house. I remember being so hot and thirsty that I sat down on a porch step for a few minutes, but the brother in charge of the group caught me and gave me a talking about being lazy. So, we would take a break inside the house...in the entryway of a house where no one was home. All we would do is to sit on the steps for a few moments.
I loved rainy Saturdays...we would go out for maybe an hour instead of the three hours we always put in.
We never took coffee breaks, either, until a pioneer from another part of the country joined the congregation and told us about it. The elders didn't like the idea of taking any kind of breaks, so it depended on who was in charge of the group if we got a coffee break or not.

Women have to put up with verbal, emotional and physical abuse, yet are constantly counselled to 'be in subjection'.

I played the accordion for years but had to give it up because I got pleats on my stomach...seriously, though, have you ever heard classical music on the accordion?
Do you know why bagpipers always walk around when playing? They are trying to get away from the noise...

My husband smoked two packs a day for nearly 30 years. A four years ago he underwent hypnotism to help him quit. It helped...he's never touched a cigarette since, and has no desire to smoke. It's been four years.

I'll never forget it. I was 6 years old and working with the book study conductor. He knocked on the door and it was opened by a guy who looked to be about ten feet tall. I barely got my name out, and he leaned down and boomed out "Yeah??? whatta ya want, kid?" I completely froze up and couldn't say another word. The BSC took over, the householder refused and slammed the door. When we left the house, the BSC gave me a dressing down for not speaking up. This happened more than 40 years ago and I remember like it happened yesterday.

I remember when very young my mom had some plants in pots on the window sill. One was very small (it was an apple tree) and I touched it, accidently uprooting it. Mom remembers that incident also, because she was in the hospital at the time having my sister and found the uprooted plant when she came home. Every once in a while I am teased by my sister about being the strongest person in the world...I uprooted an apple tree at the age of 15 months.

WHAT DID YOU MISS OUT ON WHEN IN THE BORG
by nightwarrior inwe as a family allways wanted a family pet as in (dog ) but as the ministry loomed every weekend ,as well as the meetings we decided that it would be to much trouble ,subconciously the influence came from other members in the congregation ,which in turn came from the elders in turn from the bethel ,allways sprouting on about the ministry first ,you never had time for anything elsemow ,yes a dog would be to much trouble, but now,for the past two /half years my younger children are enjoying the companionship of an animal in the house,as well as 2 cats which we have had for past eight years,.
did you find time for animals.. what did you miss out on ,allso for past 14 years we have had different caravans and motor homes ,.
what did you miss out on when in the borg ,and how did it affect you.

Higher education. If I had gone to school at a much younger age, my career situation probably would be much different right now. I always dreamed that someday I would go to college and that became a reality in 1987 after undergoing a lumpectomy. That surgery scared me into realizing how short life really is. So, I started taking classes at the local community college part-time while working full time. It took nine years to finish ( I had four surgeries during this time period) but I graduated in 1996 and went on to the university to get a BA . I graduated magna cum laude in 2001---it took 14 years of hard work, but I did it. Hearing my name called and walking across that stage to the cheers of my family is a moment I will never forget. I couldn't have done it without them.
