Does This Make Me A Racist?
by Englishman intodays newspapers are full of the le pen story.
much concern is being voiced that right-wing organisations will ride on this story to make their own agendas more widely known, ie, send all the immigrants back home, britain for the british, sod off everyone else!.
now i personally love different cultures.

Many communities like the Muslim Bangladeshis, Pakistanis, Africans, and West Indians, don’t pay anywhere enough tax to pay for even their own people who claim benefits.
This is the root of the problem. I thought people were people. I didn't realise some people belonged to other people and that I could ignore them.
I believe it is this attitude in the absorbing culture which can increase the time it takes for integration, as if the absorbing culture doesn't actually regard all people as equal, then the integrating culture will be alienated. Of course, in such a situation, even though it's the absorbing cultures 'fault', it is the integrating culture that gets the blame.
Also, if the absorbing culture can choose what aspects of other cultures it can adopt (wine with meals, spaghetti, pizza, curry, whatever), what the hell is wrong with the integrating culture choosing what aspects of the absorbing culture it adopts? Do you expect 60 year-old illiterate Bengali women to learn English, read the sun, watch Eastenders and eat fish and chips? What about freedom of choice? Does that apply only if you're in the absorbing culture?
Also, third, fourth etc. generations become increasingly integrated... bigotry diminishes, they are more accepted, and as they are more accepted they can integrate more without losing their identity. And they are entitled to their cultural identity; if the Irish can prat about on St. Patrick's day, and put bad temper down to their ancestry, and Welshmen who have never lived in Wales can get all flushed when Wales win a rugby, if English people who don't give a toss about the monarchy can get swept up by the death of 'England's Rose' (puke), then why is it wrong for Hindus to celebrate Devali, for Muslim girls to wear trousers instead of skirts, or to go to Bollywood movies? What's wrong with being a Rasta?
I'm not having a go at YOU personally Nemisis by using your quote; I would say I'd love to see PROOF of this statement, and I'd love to see your cost/benefit analysis for the Notting Hill Carnival, balancing the cost of running the carnival against increased income to local businesses. I'd also like to see your comments on the social justice of attracting cheap workers from ex-colonies to settle in the UK, and then acting like them and their children are in the same group as political refugees when the work climate changes; in Germany they don't even give the Turkish migrant workers citezenship, which is harsher, but at least more honest (you're not one of us, can't be one of us, we just need you for now).
Frequently people make statements about immigrants not contributing. In the short-term, yes, maybe this is true. And? Just let people die? Or let some other country deal with the problem? Hell, if you like that idea, Australia is calling (ducks)! But, the fact that immigrants are frequently econmically dynamic is ignored (Asians in Oz and UK being a classic example; first generation sweet shop, second chemist, third doctor). What stops this integration and becoming net contributors as a community? The absorbing community!!
Do people seriously think an immigrant will say "No, I'll sit here with my thumb up my arse" if he's treated like an equal, has equal opportunities, and doesn't have to read malinformed opinions in the press about how people like him are a menece to Society?

My experience with icelandic JWs
by geysir inafter being reading this board i just wanted to express myself a little.
please excuse my english if it goes really bad ;).
i just wanted to share my experience with the jw.. i live in iceland.
-
Abaddon
Geysir; Well done on getting so far. You're not alone, there's loads of people wityh similar experiences, and you can find them places like this!
As regards the elders, don't be intimidated by them. They only have power over you if you let them. Avoid them, or just tell them you don;t have the time, or, if it would be better for you, throw them some questions.
But be careful; it sounds like you might still be a little suseptable to the Witness jive, and they might be able to puch buttons on you. Only discuss your feelings with them if you're confident you can handkle their reactions and and come-back that might come your way (although the worst thing they can do is 'mark' you).
All the best

Are Jw's the only ones with apostates....
by VioletAnai inwho viciously attack the teachings and beliefs of their resigned religion?.
i was thinking of this last night....i have never in my life seen a movement so big as the apostates against jw's..... no other religion has displayed this....usually people just quietly leave and get on with their lives and there is no anomosity...even if they have been wronged by their religion.... but with jw's it's different...it's an all out and out attack on anyone and everyone who has something positive to say.... makes me believe the bible and the jw's even more...being here is setting the doubt in my mind right....

Okay Violet; what has triggered this orgy of self-deception you are partaking in? You seriously cannot be that silly; you've hung around here long enough that, unless you have only looked at fluff or sex threads, you must have seen some of the major flaws in the Witnesses. Not bitter 'apostate' claims, but well documented evidence pointing to organisational complacency, false prophecy, and outright deception, not to mention the entire organisational structure being that of a high control group.
Did someone push some buttons in a study or a meeting? This shit storm is not out of the blue, and I'm wiondering if you're honest enough to say what triggered it. It's not like you've proved US all wrong, and the JW's right, you've just made a decision based upon your fears, not your knowledge. Did someone mention unforgivable sin? That always works when nothing else does in making someone conform!
Re-read what you have written. Read a Wachtower on apostates. Pat yourself on the back. You're getting good at the meaningless Watchtowerese insults. No facts. And since when did Truth have to hide Violet? Tell me that.
Don't make a mistake now that you will severely regret later, please. I know you will probably belch and come up with the preprogrammed "I'm doing what I'm doing now to avoid making a mistake I'll regret", good little cultist that you are, but actually answer some of the questions people have asked and stop being childish.
Go on, tell me what triggered this...

Violetanai's baptismal party - all invited
by Marilyn inbasically we're all open minded right?
so lets put aside our negative comments and throw a cyber-space send off for violet's up coming baptism into dubdom.
she said she's planning on getting baptised soon and clearly our advice and negative thoughts are hurting her feelings.

Marilyn; Yeah, I tried to convince myself that JW's were somehow special because they stood out. I succeded for a while. But I couldn't carry on kidding myself.
I like Violet, I sincerely hope she doesn't return to the Borg's vomit. I hope this is some final struggle against the programming, where she is saying one thing whilst really feeling another; I've seen it before... someone becomes most resolute shortly before allowing themselves to accept what they already know... like breaking a fever almost.

Yeah, JW's the ulitmate rebels...
"Clint leaned against the wall, the magazines casually held in a nonchalant hand... he flicked a cool glance over the passing people, keeping his face impassive behind the mirror sunglasses whilst he thought... the fools.
It was so plain and clear; they were SO brain washed by this system of things that they couldn't even take in the immense important of the message on the magazines. Thank goodness that he had turned his back on the mindless conformity of society as a whole, to make a stand as a fighter for right in these last days. He checked his watch for the twentieth time that hour, and decided that if he stayed another ten minutes, then by the time he had walked to the donut shop, he'd have two hours under his belt. A chore, but fighting the right fight... just keep your hours above a certain level to avoid getting hassle, is all. He'd also have to remember to take the mirror sunglasses off, as Elder Berry had given him a hardtime about aping worldly styles last time he'd forgotten to remove them before meeting up with everyone.
Obviously, he had questions. Somethings weren't clear to him. But it wasn't right to ask questions... just like being a secret service agent, he saw it as operating on a 'need to know' basis. And questions were scarey, as asking questions was often taken as a sign of disloyalty; and indeed, that time someone had asked about Millitary Service and Mexico during a Watchtower study... well, even if they were telling the truth about things (and it would be disloyal to investiage it, although he had looked in the CD-ROM index, as surely if it was dealt with in there he could read the answer without showing disloyalty), well, the answers would be given when neccesary. Until then, it was essential to present a unified face to opposers and worldy people. The fact a JW would say exactly the same thing in Cairo as in Chicago was proof of how unique Witnesses were; no mere worldy organisation could conform like that!"
JW rebels... that one was funny Violet... yeah, you're really Neo, aren't you? Waking up and seeing the world as it is. Rebelling against corruption and deceit and a society which applies double standards... oh... well...
Here's a song for you, rebel!
Better start a running
Head on down the highway
Running from apostates
Before ya faith's destroyed entirely
Yeah darling ya gonna run on back to
Cognitive dissonance's sweet embrace
Burn all of your ships at once and
Go back to baseLike a true JW child
Your born, born to be mild
You can lie so high
"I'm never gonna die!"Born to be mild!
Sorry to be sarcastic, but you're old enough to take it I think!
All the best
Born to be mild!

Attacking Newbie JW's
by VioletAnai ini was attacked here when i first admitted that i was studying with the jw's.
i also noted that blessed_something or other (sorry, bad memory) was attacked also....just because we say something positive about the jw's!
i think that is mighty unfair and defeats the purpose of you trying to turn us against the jw's.

Dear Violet,
Come on... your desire to go back has more to do with fear of being alone, fear of having to decide what to do with your life, fear that things might not be so nice and simple as the Borg make out, than any claim on your part that it is the absolute 'truth'.
Given a choice of making your own life and returning to the half-life which you have already lived much of your life in, you're going for the easy option.
Why do I say this? Because you are not disproving ANYTHING that is said here about organisational errors, prophetic incompetance, scientific accuracy, or other specific criticisms of the Borg. You are just complaining about the comments being negative.
You don't like the comments being so negative all the time, as it keeps reminding you, that even if you wanted it to be the truth (which you obviously do), it obviously ISN'T the truth.
If you read the literature, associate with Witnesses, go to the meetings, you won't have any of those NASTY reminders that you are living a lie.
Of course, if you do have some rebuttals of the varies accusations regarding the Borg and its teachings, fine, fire away. If not, please don't think you can fool us with your protestations that 'we' are unfair... obviously 'we' are unfair at times (sometimes we are not shiney happy people regarding our experience in the Borg... well, excuse me!), but, even if people get a little heated and over the top... we have a point. The Dubs can make no better claim to being God's organisation than any other religion, and have consistantly screwed their adherants on any number of levels. And you want to go back?
But you don't provide any explaination why all the criticisms of the Borg are wrong and that they are God's Organisations... I think you'd be hard pressed to!
You're afraid and alone, and want to return to the herd, as even though it is tended by wolves, the security of all those bodies pressed together moving in one direction is comforting... and that's what you need I think.
Comfort. Being told that everything will be okay.
Well, it will be Violet, provided you don't sacrifice your freewill on the altar of comfort.
All the best to you, whatever you choose. I hope you see this as an interchange of opinions rather than an attack on you.

i remember celabrating my baptism at 17 with a few pints in the pub.

Beer is like oral sex; the amount of head you get varies according to where you are.
In England, especially the south, unless one is serving Guiness or another Stout, or one of the Nitro-keg 'Cream Ales' (Ale for lager drinkers), you essentially don't give ANY head. If there's more than a froth at the top, and the glass isn't filled to the brim, you'll get lots of nasty looks and 'to the top, please' comments. In the north I'm told they like more head.
As regards temperature, well, you are more likely nowadays to get lager at a proper lager temperature - as lager is a 'foreign' drink, many pubs didn't have refrigeration in their cellars, as your typical English Bitter or Ale is served cool, but nor refrigerated, so there was never a need. It's less common to get warm larger nowadays, as we appear to be entering the 21st C and have refrigeration for the beers that need it in most pubs.
Never drink English lager. It's foul. The Europeans do it quite nicely thank you; Grolsh and Becks are my favourates. I've mixed feelings about the North American lagers I've drunk; the 'light' stuff like Rolling Rock and Sol is pointless unless you like a lot of water in your beer. Michelob is quite foul. Bud is tolerable at times. The English do very nice Bitters and Ales, as well as some horrid ones. I canot profess any knowledge of American microkegs apart for some half tolerable stuff I had at the Bumbershoot in Seattle a few years ago. There are enough excellent dark beers in Holland and Belgium to keep one occupied for quite some time, like Westmallia Tripple (9% and tastes lovely).
Here in Holland, you get LOADS of head; the little 'pilsje' size is 250ml, which is bugger all really, and you get what looks like an equal amount of head to liquid, so they tend to disappear quickly. They actually froth the beer up and scrape the excess foam off the top with a strip of plastic. Strange, unless it's what you're used to.
England has PATHETIC alcohol measures... they're actually metric now, 25ml... so half the size of most other countries. As for whiskey... well... I like Laphroig... smells funny, tastes great. Canadian whiskey is good too. I like Bourbons too.

Watchtower leadership say We Don't Make Rules!
by ozziepost inan announcement on the official web-site of jehovah's witnesses is causing some 'eyebrows to be raised'.. the watchtower society have announced that they "avoid making rules and regulations beyond those provided in the scriptures, and they do not follow traditions that contradict bible teachings.
emphasis is placed on personal application of bible principles and the value of a sound, bible-based conscience.. this comes as a surprise to many thousands in the jehovah's witness community who have become accustomed to the changing rules and regulations imposed compulsorily on its members.. it should be noted in the watchtower society's statement that "emphasis is placed on personal application of bible principles".
this will come as a surprise to many of its members.

Dear James...
You are very mad or very funny... possibly both!
8-)
Come on... does anyone STILL seriously believe that? It's no wonder it doesn't make sense! It's just part of the maddness of the Dubs. I'm an atheist, but can see that if there was a god, and the Bible was his word, then the 144,000 is not literal, and that a 'Heaven hope' under such a mythos would likely be to all people of good will.
