whats so bad about believing people go to heaven?
by sowhatnow init occurred to me today, that so often, my mother will make the comment that .
"those false religions teach that everyone is going to heaven when they die, oh sure, .
all you have to do is be a good person, and off you go to heaven.

Belief in heaven does nothing good for humanity and does not move humankind forward. Why would humans try to figuring out cure for cancer, HIV, diabetes, when there is a nice fix afterlife. Dealing with poverty? Why? When everyone gets reward (or punishment) after death. Belief in heaven is counterproductive to humanity and it is regressive force in society. It is also not a core belief in Judaism. Jews do not have defined strict beliefs in heavenly afterlife. Early Israelites did not get reward in afterlife, their reward was to settle in Promised Land and cultivate it. To make it better, to turn desert into flourishing garden ruled by justice and law. There was no promise of afterlife and heavenly reward for Moses or Aaron. -

So I don't understand these protests. Either someone has misunderstood completely, or they think child-beating is ok.
Considering that in case of Eva Michalkova there was no proof of any abuse and beating, and Norwegian government was caught lying to Czech, Polish, Lithuanian, etc. governments. You are making up stuff up by associating someone somewhere had beat up child so one country has the right to size under-age citizen of another country (kids of Eva Michalkova are Czech nationals and have Czech passport, not Norwegian), so it makes in that case a right. You trying to justify something that is very broad and unrelated in that specific case.
Norway is the only country in Europe with exception of Serbia to sign the international agreement on rights of Parents and Children. Six different EU and NATO counties compared Norwegian issue with national socialist family experiment and there are significant talks breaking up diplomatic relationship with Norway among them. Expelling Norway from NATO would be a good start.

Original Sin / Salvation without a literal Adam and Eve?
by Coded Logic insomething i've never understood is if adam and eve are just metaphorical where did "original sin" come from.
and, if there was no original sin, what is the value of jesus sacrifice?.
i know a lot of christians believe in evolution but i've never understood how such a belief is structured.

Problems with Adam and Eve 6 years ago as the start of the humanity are numerous. During interglacial period 30,000 to 18,000 BC there was already well established communities with human activity, pottery, and worship, which were eventually destroyed by the last glaciation in 15,000-to 10,000BC. People in that era left graves, various artifacts (like Venus of Willensdorf), sites; and then they abandoned entire region for 5,000 to 7,000 years. New inhabitants arrived to different climate and habitat after last continental glacier melted. -

Jews do not believe in original, Adamic sin. This is a Christian invention. In Judaism, the life is always created holy and perfect. Also people do not inherit sin, because everyone is responsible for only its own sin. Jews do not believe that population is responsible for sin caused by Adam and Eve. -

"There will be earthquakes...."
by Fisherman ingiven: the prophecy is true.. what did jesus mean?
i have an app that alerts me of any earthquake all over the world.
since i got the app, it is one earthquake after another all over the world.

And just think, if God had been a little more intelligent, he could have constructed the Earth to never have any earthquakes.
Earth crust recycle is a vital for survival of the species and life. If the plate tectonics ends, so will life on this planet.

I never experienced earthquake. Been through several hurricanes. Once I remember a funny episode from the police who were called into a fight between two females neighbors. The younger accused the older one that her dancing caused her house shake and things were falling off the shelves. The police tried to explain it that the shaking that she felt was not caused by morbidly obese woman dancing around the house, but it was actually small earthquake. -

There are also significant areas of the earth that are least prone to earthquakes. These are central Canada, Eastern Russia, large parts of Australia and Africa - this continent is the least seismically active.
The EQ can strike everywhere, and no area on earth is immune to it. In Canada, small EQ can be related to post-glacial, isostatic rebound, which can be observed all over the world that were under glaciation. However, the earth crust under cratons like in Canada is stable, and EQ not frequent. Nonetheless, they still occur, but not on scale and frequency as they happened along the rift. Also it is necessary to mention that geology does not know all the fault and fractures, and in places like Australia and Canada there are not old records that can pinpoint into possible rifts.
There is also not agreement on all the possible continental plates and microplates. When I studied a plate tectonics, some articles pointed that African plate is splitting in two (Nubian plate and Somali plate), but other research indicates that it splits in three (within Zambia). Even within USA there is no agreement what causes Madrid quake outside Memphis, TN, which was the strongest EQ in lower 48 states in history of USA and stronger than any EQ in California in last 200 years. East Russia is also thought to be a plate of its own, where lake Baikal is a rift, but the movement of the plates against each other is stable (about less than 1mm per year). It does not mean that EQ would not happen there as well. Central Europe, due pressure of Alps and Carpathians against stable Bohemian massif, can generate strong EQ as high as 8 magnitude, which happened last time in 1786. It is totally forgotten and similar quake will be deadly.

In the relationship of the Earth's geological history, the rate of earthquakes is decreasing since the formation of the planet. Earthquakes were recorded on Mars as well. There is not much relationship between biblical doomsday beliefs and plate tectonics. Today we know that Earth is dynamic and quakes can happen anywhere on this planet. Some areas where two plates meet see significantly more earthquake. Mediterranean basin is a place where several plates interact, but it s not as active like Ring of Fire. So large quakes there happened outside the human lifespan. So when they happened, the population was surprised and went into Armageddon frenzy. -

JW Expressions We Hate
by Socrateswannabe ini was browsing through stuff on jw.org recently and ran across some expressions that really grate on my nerves: loyal love, loving-care, and loving-kindness, as in: "please exercise loving-kindness toward your servant.
" who talks like that?
they must be relics of the fred franz era.

Types attracted to the sect known as jehovahs witnesses.
by atomant inl have observed the types of people attracted to the sect are many times unbalanced, unstable, emotionally insecure types.the jdubs seem to home in like vulchers circling the prey ,preying on the vulnerables.they tried it on me when my father who was an elder died.promising that if you become a dub you will one day see him again.l said how can you promise that when you keep making false misleading predictions.l was wondering if others have observed this phenomenon.

It depends on the situation and JW use it to entice people to the religion. My parents were brought in by my JW relatives. They lived middle class in communist Czechoslovakia in 1960's when everything was uprooted by Soviet invasion in 1968. My father was purged, lost job, prestige, social standing, future. My JW aunt offered a bible study where mighty Jehovah will be arriving in couple years and will destroy Soviet army in the battle of Armageddon. In Cold War in 1968-1972 there was little hope that anything would change. Soviets tanks were on the streets, later they moved behind the city, and no power on earth would defeat it. The prospect were bleak, but WT offered a hope and many people jumped. My mom got baptized to the 1975 hype, but my dad, while deeply religious never did.
Many people like my parents joined WT around the time. We had elder who could not wait to see angels destroying the Soviets and the Red Army, and voiced it all the time. It seems that it was something he lived for, for mighty army of heavenly warriors that will destroy the wicked system. My JW relatives joined the cult in the 50's under Stalinist rule, when persecution of WT was brutal and many people were attracted to the idea of martyrdom. Once communist rule collapsed in 1989, JW started to move in obscurity in former East Block as very a few people believe that BS and these who stayed like my mom, they do it for social reason. I see the issue joining WT is much differently in USA vs USSR.
