I agree that religion has been often a force for division. But the real obstacle is not religion but extremism. In past centuries extremism was often found in religion and still is today to a degree. Extremism however can be found in all kinds of ideologies.

If religion were to end tomorrow we would still have extemists. Mankind is beginning to mature and realize there is no one true religion. Of course not all have realized this as the op ed pointed out. We also need to let go of other extremist view points.

Jam, it isn't up to an outside force (such as a god) to set matters straight. It is up to us as humans living on the earth. We've been given free will to learn if we decide to destroy our planet then no one is going to stop us. I think we've received teachings that resonate with something within us to guide us to view all other humans as brothers but this is a very difficult lesson to learn as human history points out.

Jam, people who murder in the name of god or commit any other heinous act in god's name are blind. True, they themselves may believe that they are acting as "god's representative" but it only shows how sick they are. I think people should be fed up with religious wars or any other ideology that motivates people to hurt others.

I think humans have been progressing and learning. What was once accepted as normal such as slavery is now thought of as an evil. At one time what ISIS did would have been thought of by many people as an acceptable way to wage war. To most people's credit it is now thought of as a dispicable evil.

Perhaps earth is a schoolroom to learn what works and what doesn't work. We've been slowly progressing through the tens of thousands of years.

What ISIS has done is just plain horrible. There have always been people on the earth that have acted like this it is nothing new. However, as free-will beings wouldn't a god allow us to act out our free will even if it hurts others?

With all respect you didn't debunk anything. Some physicists believe consciousness has something to do with collapsing the wave function. A majority presently believe as you say that it could be a measurement device that does so. At this point nothing has been proven with absolute certainty.

As Richard Feynman said "If you think you understand quantum theory . . . you don't understand quantum theory."

Why be so insistent that you are right that you can't even comprehend why someone wouldn't have made up their mind yet?

I certainly do not claim to be any expert on quantum theory. Are you an expert?

Bohm, so you would like everyone to just adopt any theory that the majority of the current scientific establishment has? Hell, why even think for oneself? I guess I'll just accept as 100% truth whatever the government establishment says about anything as well.

No thanks. I won't confine myself to any mental boxes. As I said I haven't made up my mind.

I'm not sure bohm. I haven't made up my mind. David Bohm and coauthor Basil Hiley write in their book "The Undivided Universe" "

"Throughout this book it has been our position that the quantum theory itself can be understood without bringing in consciousness and that as far as research in physics is concerned, at least in the present general period, this is probably the best approach. However, the intuition that consciousness and quantum theory are in some sense related seems to be a good one."

Bruce Rosenblum writes in his book Quantum Enigma "Does consciousness collapse wavefunctions? That question, raised at the beginning of quantum theory, cannot be answered. It can’t even be well posed. Consciousness itself is a mystery."

I guess we'll have to wait for more information to come in and keep our minds open.
