Congratulations. What you are doing is so hard! I hope all goes well for you, and that the backlash is not too severe. Be strong!
Q.
inform my jw parents of my official stance on "the path they tried to teach us when we were young girls.
" <---(oft-used phrase to try to "guilt" us into coming back as jw's)
it'll be a first and a definite shocker coming from the likes of me...i usually avoid all religious discussion/confrontation on the few occasions i've visited them.
Congratulations. What you are doing is so hard! I hope all goes well for you, and that the backlash is not too severe. Be strong!

I am curious to know...
I'm a pisces.
when i first was studying with the duds, one of the things i found interesting is that duds are ok with drinking alcohol, "in moderation".
i never was a big drinker, usually one drink if i'm out and will have to drive and no more than three in any 24 hour period, even if i'm staying home.. i wonder if the fact the "the judge" was a rumpot contributed to the soft attitude on alcohol?
most of the brothers i knew were big drinkers and many of the older elders drank more with dinner that i drink in a weekend.
jads,
I don't think anyone denies that there are other people from other religions who have suffered in the same way we have. But there are certain, unique social and religious experiences that all of us have shared within the religion of Jehovah's Witnesses. That is why this message board is not for Catholics or Born Again Christians, or any other group...and that is why we talk about being JW's and what it was like when we were.
If I were a former Mormon, I might be posting in a Mormon discussion forum. See?
As far as whining and holding on to the past, well--if it bothers you, you probably should not be around ANY people who are trying to heal from past bad experiences. Part of the process is getting it all out of your system.
A discussion group like this serves a purpose. When I get it out of my system, I'll probably stop coming here. Until then, it would be great if I didn't have people like you trying to censor my feelings just because you seem to be in a different 'place' than I am.
Q.
what did god love before he created?
does god need man to love?
god is love.
Well, I think the problem is that we are defining 'love' in human terms. God is LOVE--but love, in itself is almost as indefinable as God. They can both be described by different attributes--but in reality, they are much, much more than the definitions we give them. Love is an enormous, creative, light, energy. God is an enormous, creative, light, energy.
Human beings are inclined to make God in their image. God does not 'love' the way we do. That is why so much of the bible is just obvious silliness. God, in the bible, behaves like a human--and sometimes, not even a very GOOD human!
Q.
well, the scotts are taking a well-deserved vacation to san antonio starting tomorrow, so if you don't hear from us for a few days we're okay, just away from the internet.
the cowboys training camp has begun and we have tickets for the scrimmage between the dallas cowboys and the houston texans saturday night.
while big tex is watching the practices, the kids and i are going to check out the shopping, the riverwalk, and all the toy stores we can find.
I'm in Austin--San Antonio is less than an hour from here...
I hope you have a great time--I LOVE S.A. It is a GREAT city with lots of super fun stuff to do!
I'll look forward to hearing about your trip!
Q.
ok, i have been 'out' for about 9 years, now.
in all that time i have lived in 4 different states.
i have only had two visits from jw's during that time and both times they were from spanish congregations...the first time because my boyfriend at the time was mexican-american and someone told them we spoke spanish...the second time because my next door neighbors spoke spanish and they came to my place accidentally.. at any rate, both times as soon as they found out we spoke english, they scurried away and apologized for bothering us.

9 years is a long time. This seems particularly ineffective, doesn't it?
I mean, think of all the people they haven't reached! I personally know many people who've never even MET a JW. They sure have a lot of work to do--and FAST--because according to my father, 'this old system isn't going to last much longer'.
Thoughts?

from what i've learned about judaism, jews believe that god is both male and female and cannot be described in one gender only.
this leads to this question: is the lord's prayer, which starts out with "our father, who art in heaven" really be a prayer that jesus taught us to pray?
if jesus was jewish, and evidence seems to point that way, why would he use a male gender identity to describe god when teaching people how to pray?
Then wouldn't most of the 'gospel' accounts be a hoax--since Jesus refers to his 'Father' in several instances--and at the time he was sent to trial, was accused of calling himself the Son of God? In fact, his dying words are alleged to have been--"Forgive them FATHER for they know not what they do..."
I read that many of the things in the gospels have been found to preexist Jesus in Jewish folklore. The writers/editors of the scriptures attributed these sayings to Jesus, but in fact, they are old sayings that were around for centuries before he lived. So--all those nice little bits that make up the sermon on the mount, for instance, are ancient Jewish axioms.
Q.
p.s. I can't tell you off-hand, but I think I read it in "Don't Know Much About The Bible", a book by Kenneth C. Davis. I've loaned my copy out so I can't verify that that is where I read it...
i'm going to my brothers birthday party in september, and the dress code is the 70s.
i'm a bit stuck on where the best place to get hold of 70s clothes, and what sort of things do you recomend?
i fancy wearing a pair of platforms as i'm not too tall, but how easy are they to walk in after a few drinks?
Try Ebay. I got a couple of EXCELLENT retro dresses that even Farah Fawcett would be proud of--and at a bargain price!
