Evolution and spirits
by Chris Tann inas of now iam making an unbiased examination of evolution.
however one thing keeps me hanging on to the belief of a supreme spirit being; the existence of spirits.
i have heard countless accounts of people who have experienced frightening encounters with evil forces.

I don't think abstract thinkers are more prone to stupidity.
Sheesh, physics is all about proving abstract concepts, umm, right? I mean, the higher you go in mathematics (despite what some snooty engineer may think), the more abstract your thinking must become.
As far as this poster is concerned, the opposite is true. It's rigid thinking that leads to beliefs in religion and spirits and other such nonsense. All the little wage slaves being raised in the public school system, taught revisionist history and hate, are easy pickings for those who peddle fundamentalist clap-trap.

Thanks, cofty. That really clarifies the point you were making. Belief systems, especially when learned before cognitive thinking processes are established, can be deeply-rooted in one's psychological makeup. So true!

Psychology does not promote belief in spirits. The only connection I can make, is that a psychologist may help someone figure out that they are NOT seeing spirits or demons.
Seriously, I don't see what you are saying. I wouldn't want a person to discount therapy as a legitimate means of freeing themselves from the 'cult thinking' because they read here, that belief in spirits was promoted by psychology. So could you explain what you mean? Not looking to argue, just really want to get to the bottom of this, as you are quite well-read. Though we disagree on style, I agree with your facts just about 100% of the time.
Thanks!

Despicable crazy people
by jgnat inthere are some mental illnesses which come with the potential for extreme violence.
i'm not talking the sociopath here who kills without remorse, but those mentally ill people while in the throes of their delusions who are driven to kill.
the outcomes can be horrific.. on december 6, 1989, a lone gunman gunned down fourteen women at a montreal college.

Thank you for not mentioning 'his' name. When a woman massacres a group of men, I will consider your point more valid.

Psychology has NOTHING to do with spirits and demons. It is a medical science. Maybe check the wording, did you mean to say (????).
I only mention this Cofty, because so many JWs have been taught that going to a psychologist or therapist can encourage demons, not to pick at what you said. Many JWs and ex-JWs need therapy, and linking psychology to belief in demons and spirits is just wrong. Thanks.
To the OP, please reference any newspaper articles - this is quite vague.

I just finished reading the thread, and wow! I'm so happy your wife is with you.
Good luck tomorrow; I hope you get to make the arguments you want. "Fight the good fight" , and live in REAL truth.
Cheers to Barbara Anderson and Joe Grundy for helping, as well. (wow, Joe Grundy, you sure are amazing for being a never-in-the-JW and caring so much about us!)
