Charlie Sheen is the one who pops into my head, actually. But maybe you are thinking of Troglodytes, not Neanderthals. : P

We may have interbred with Neanderthals earlier than previously thought.
by cappytan init is now thought that we have been interbreeding with neanderthals as early as 100,000 years ago.. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-35595661.
craziest thing i just realized: some women still breed with neanderthals up to this day.
rihanna and chris brown anyone?.

A lot of JW girls play with boys' feelings. It's the only power they have. Much of the time, they don't even realize they are doing it.
Reality is not always 'nice'.

I knew one famous musician, Kevin MacMichael, UK band Cutting Crew, and collaborated (writing, producing, performing) with Robert Plant for one album. (on the ax in the vid below). He was my friend's (abusive) husband. Are the rich different? Hell yeah - convicted of wife beating 3 times, and never spent an hour in jail.
My best friend is uber talented. He can play over 4,000 songs and has written close to 140. He is anti-establishment, and has never 'worked for the man'. After obtaining his BA Hon. in American History, decided to travel. He is a busker, and went to every province & territory in Canada, and every state in the continental USA, by playing his guitar.
[EDIT: the music business - says it all; it's all about who you know, and do they find you 'marketable' - occasionally, real talent breaks through.]
I like artists, and know a lot of talented people who are musicians, visual artists, writers.
Oh, and speakig of writers, I knew Spider Robinson, who has won Hugo and Nebula awards. He was a draft dodger, and landed here in the Maritimes in the 1970s. I worked with him for a couple of years. Super guy, and I wrote him an email about 5 years ago. We had a brief correspondence. Nice guy, and I love my hippies!

Trey Bundy: One Year of Reporting JW Child Abuse - Your comments please!
by AndersonsInfo inhttp://watchtowerdocuments.org/trey-bundy-one-year-of-reporting-jw-child-abuse/.
trey bundy: one year of reporting jw child abuse.
it’s been one year since trey bundy first reported the watchtower’s child abuse problems.. twelve months ago the center for investigative reporting (cir) began publishing information about jehovah’s witnesses and their cover-up of child sexual abuse on their website, reveal.

Trey,
Since Ms. Anderson first posted an item from Reveal, I have listened to several of the programs. Great work, and wow, it's simply, impressive. I'm happy that someone like yourself, and Reveal, would focus on the JW. It's time the truth was told. Few journalists (let alone those who are at the top of their field) want to bother with the JWS - it's not been the easiest subject to research. There is so much secrecy, and they have such a 'good rep' in the eyes of most people, that's it is hard to get the stories told.
So, a big shout-out and thank you from Canada. xx

A direction to wholesome living is possible without either.
Punk's motto: Live hard, die young, and leave a good-looking corpse.
I wouldn't go quite that far, but I have worked hard, partied like a rock star when I was younger, and my only regret is smoking. Happy to say that I am now a quitter, HOORAY! It's an horrible addiction.

Evolution and Atheism - please help
by Fernando innot being familiar with either, my question is:.
what is the relationship between evolution and atheism?.
i'd love to hear from anyone and everyone, and also from any perspective.. without limiting the conversation in any way, i would of course also appreciate comments that are simple, clear, direct and correct (as i don't have the capacity to do a phd in evolution or atheism)..

Yes, those darn philosophers! They should all rot in hell!
Especially Socrates. I mean, Socratic Method? Give me a break! As if, philosophy has ever made any valid contributions to the world, and especially to science. Puh-leez!
* cough, cough Scientific Method cough, cough *

Toasting is Pagan - How many contradictions can fit in 2 pages, I found 5?
by jwfacts inthe watchtower 2007 feb 15 pp.30-31 explains why jehovah's witnesses are not to toast.
what is astounding is that for each point they then go on an explain why the point is irrelevant, yet still conclude toasting is wrong.
what did people think when reading this?

The idea of God itself is a pre-eminent pagan concept. The primitive folk explanation for the reason of the world's being is that a god made it and us.
BAZINGA! gotta love that one. A JW would reply "But Israelites descended directly from Adam, and they worshipped Jehovah back then". arrggghhh!
Puppy, that was a great point. Here's to Jesus! *clink*

Hi, and welcome to the rest of your life.
One word of advice: step away from the cigarette pack. It's one hell of a monkey to have on your back. : )
Lately, there has been a lot of religious discussion here. There used to be more social talk, but there have been a lot of 'discussions' between atheists and Xtians. *yawns*
So, what's your field?

Thank you for giving a good explanation of how ADDICTIVE benzos are. Too many drugs are used in our culture (and I'm not talking about street drugs). Many people think narcotics are the only dangerous prescription meds, but in fact, all forms of anti-depressants, anxiety meds, PPIs, and many other prescription medications are addictive. I don't like to say 'can form a dependency', because I feel that is an euphemism that makes them seem less dangerous than street drugs.
It's a quick fix that can turn into a very long 'broken'. I'm always surprised when I hear someone talk casually about 'popping Xanax', instead of getting some help for their issues. Addiction to pills is a serious thing, and some physicians have a very free hand with the 'scrip pad.
Short-term, when you *really* need them. That should be the rule for most 'scrips (with obvious exceptions, such as insulin for type 1 diabetes, and thyroid medications).
(Mother's Little Helper, by the Rolling Stones = Valium. We've been drugging ourselves into a stupor for a long time.)

For those whose insights into evolution led them to atheism, I would like to learn more about the stepping stones on the journey.
Hi, Fernando. My journey was short.
Growing up in the early 70s in a *very* JW family, I learned evolution in school. Science was one of my favorite subjects (after math), and I learned evolution as part of the curriculum. It was never discussed at home, as it was assumed that I believed the creation story, having been raised in the Lie.
As a child, I did what my parents said, and was a GREAT little JW, perfect in every way. I had a big flaw, though. I loved to read (still do), I loved school and learning about *everything* (still do), and especially math and science! My first year of high school was so exciting ... AP Math! Biology! Chemistry! ... and my second year, even better, because I was taking my first physics course.
But my mother saw how much I loved education, and I had (against parents' wishes) signed up for the AP courses instead of 'general'; iow I was taking university prep. So, they hauled me out of school when I was 14, just after I started my second year of high school. I have no memory of the next 2 years. I moved in with another local JW family at 16, and boarded with them while pioneering (cleaning and waiting tables in a private club to support myself). When I was 17, I moved to another province to 'serve where the need is greater'.
One of my pioneer friends hung himself in his room. He had not shown up for a few days, and we were concerned for him. He left a note. Gay - mid 70s - single mom who was a 'faithful sister' - he was in total despair. It's very fuzzy memories, but I got very ill. The last thing I remember was a bad fever and seeing bugs crawling up the wall in my room and freaking out. (No, I never did drugs, it was fever hallucinations.)When I came to, after 3 months of an unexplained illness (high fevers, delirium, mother spoon-feeding me grape juice and baby foods), I realized I did NOT believe in the JWS. I dunno, but it seems like this was my personal kundalini. It was all nonsense, and I could not, could NOT, go back to the KH and be a liar (that was my thinking back then - very B&W). Besides, there was so much hypocrisy (heavy drinking elders, friends having sex, all kinds of stuff), and where was the LOVE? So, I got kicked out on my own for refusing to go to the meetings, though I was still not a well person.
Over the next few years, I researched other faiths, and read books on cults, including Dr. Penton's on the JWS. I went to visit my friend's mother, who had all the RCC books (they were *very* Catholic), and she explained some of their doctrine. Nope, didn't get it. I read about Buddhism, and liked some of their ways of doing things, but as a religion? No thanks, but namaste! : )) And so on. I spent a lot of time at the library, which has always been my second home.
After reading and researching until I had enough, I felt at peace in my knowledge that god is a construct, and religion is an effective tool for controlling people. It has been used to control the masses since early civilizations.
I must admit, I was drawn to Celtic mysticism, and native religious thought (animal as spirit guide), but in the end, reject any and all notion of any god or supreme being. It just 'does not compute' in my Spock-type brain.
Hope that was helpful. And I'd like to add, that I respect everyone's journey. It's wrong, imo, to try and shove my non-belief down other people's throats. If a person chooses to 'have faith', good for them! As long as they don't try to convert me, I'm okay with that.
We all have our delusions. Some have delusions of grandeur. Some people believe that in the western world, we are free ... ahahaha!
That's my story, and I'm stickin' to it.
