Here, it seemed like the spanish speaking congregations were way more hospitable, and seemed to get away with alot more as far as dress and entertainment. Maybe its a cultural thing. And yes, anytime any known JW who was single (either sex) visited, everybody gossiped about how they were looking for a mate.

by Maverick ineven though the dubs are suppossed to be one big, happy, ( braindead) family i found visiting other halls quite interesting.
if i was moving i would check out the hall in that territory.
if i was on vacation or working i would find a hall nearby.

Kidnapping children from the non-jw parents, was there a trend?
by Netty inthis happened a few times, back in the 70's, in the congregation that i went to.
there were a few families who were jw's, divorced and remarried, had (physical anyway) custody of their children, but the divorced spouse was non-believing and wanted their rights to the children.. one family, when the father of the children went to court to get custody of the kids, picked up and fled the country.
we later learned they were in costa rica.

I get what you mean about the laws. Wow, how wonderful that you found your mother. I remember growing up with these kids, thinking how terrible it must be not have their mother in your life. But the lengths that witnesses went to back in those days, such a terrible thing to do, just because the other parent was not a witness, sick, sick sick!

When the Watchtower Society Celebrated Birthdays
by Kenneson incharles taze russell began zion's watch tower in july of 1879. but the earliest clue i could find in its pages that bible students celebrated birthdays was in the nov. 15, 1905 issue, which offered for sale copies of "heavenly manna" sugggested for birthday and christmas gifts.
on april 1, 1907 it was announced that the new edition of the "manna" would "contain the same texts and comments as the former one, but will have twice as many pages.
every alternate leaf will be blacked ruled, for use as an autograph and birthday record.

This happened a few times, back in the 70's, in the congregation that I went to. There were a few families who were jw's, divorced and remarried, had (physical anyway) custody of their children, but the divorced spouse was non-believing and wanted their rights to the children.
One family, when the father of the children went to court to get custody of the kids, picked up and fled the country. We later learned they were in Costa Rica. I remember at the time, even though I might have been 14ish, thinking this was really weird. Ends up, they moved back to this country years later, and the children ended up looking up their father and leaving the truth (and the mother who kidnapped them) anyway.
Another story, one family who started coming to our congregation in the late 70's. the father kidnapped the children away from their non-beliving mother, in the country where they were born, Nicaragua, and brought them here to the states. THe kids had no clue where their mother was for a good decade or so. The mother hired a detective, found the kids, who were adults by now. Neither child remained a witness and one went to go live with the mother.
SO, was this some weird trend back when i was growning up, (things seemed to be way more fanatical back then) or does this type of stuff still happen?

I want there to be a loving God, oh so desperately!
But after calling and pleading for hours at a time to God, I have always been left by myself.
Is he too busy for me? Is he laughing at me with his buddies up there? Is he all in my head?
I NEED ANSWERS
I am sorry you are going through this Michael! I think maybe I am just like you, I want to desperately believe. I do have my moments where I say the same thing to myself that you just said above.

Why Netty, why do you believe in God?
loaded question. But I guess some of it may have to do with the fact that I have very small children, maybe. If it was just me to consider, I dont know how I would answer that question. Something about the obligation to the kids I think. And maybe it could be a part of the JW brainwashing I have never considered trying to erase.

Permanent loss from being brought up in JW
by Cunfusious infor the past few hours i have been reading through this forum and an overwhelming sadness came over me.
for a long time i thought just getting out and not being part of the organization would be the "escape" that being happy in a normal life provided.
born and raised (well 17 was it for me) under the tight grips of this organization has made my life a constant battle over right and wrong.

Michele, time has seemed to help me. (not completely, dont know if that ever happens) but as far as feeling like a pagan walking into a church, doing non witness things. That is how I felt at the beginning, but I kept doing it. And it got easier, and better. And then after a while, I started liking it, actually noting very cool differences and appreciating it. Give it time, but keep doing it, you will get used to it, I think, I hope. And hopefully come to the point where you feel good about it. I do (for the most part) now.
I know what you mean about wondering where you stand with Jehovah, that is a very tough one because of the horrible things that were bashed into our heads, about what would happen to us if we did not stay Jehovahs witnesses. Remember, those were mind control tactics, used by a hurtful cult that destroys families, and does not have the best interest of its members in mind. Of course you are in a good place with God, of course you are!
I have found a way to have God in my life (very limited because thats the way I want it) without feeling like a satan worshiper (I know what you mean ) I teach my kids to pray before meals and bedtime, and try (not regular though) to get to church on Sunday. And thats it for me. Thats about all I want. But it did take me some time to get to this point.
So sad what you and your family have been through because of the sick disfellowshipping/shunning rules. Makes me angry to hear it.
I hope you find what you are looking for. You will get some good advice here on this board. Good luck!

Apparently my two year old had managed to report this to my mom. Arent' babies just the cutest?
I said "YES MOM, and when we sit down to eat we all hold hands (GASP, not done growing up JW) and thank GOD for the food, we dont say Jehovah"
If looks could kill, well, dont think I'd be posting this on this board today.

I still think there is a God, I dont teach my kids to call him Jehovah, but I do teach them that there is a God. If my hubbys catholic family refer to him as Jesus, thats ok with me, whatever you call him, doesnt matter to me. I pray to God. I am not sure about alot of what I was taught growing up as a JW anymore, but I still do believe in God.
