The GB is now even insulting is own members. In today's lesson we learn that we are gullible if we believe media reports about the JWs. This manipulation is sad. Now people willfeel incredible internal pressure not to believe anything they read. Cult conditioning.

Intro to psychology is enough to see through their control methods. That's what I'm taking now. And the GB is definitely becoming subtly more authoritarian. Especially since the new fds teaching.

I had a friend cut me off for "questioning the GB. " We are encouraged to cut off association with such ones in this month's study edition. The mentality is there. I'm not predicting or projecting anything. Just saying that JWs are no different than other people and many would do whatever the GB asks including murder.

As Shirley said, JWs are not immune to human psychology. That was my whole point. We already justify cruel and destructive behavior. I once did myself.

Designs, I'm not predicting anything. I'm just saying the potential exists for good people to do horrible things due to social pressure and uncritical obedience. I love football, but I've seen how an overbearing coach and the desire to not appear weak can cause high school players to push themselves to death in hot weather. It happens every year during the hottest preseason practices. All I'm saying is that IF the GB were to demand it, some would follow. As an active witness I know how we've already been conditioned to view enemies as deserving of death. The GB is demanding unquestioning obedience. Think of the listen, obey and be blessed earworm. Does that song encourage critical thinking? Or the directive for elders to obey and be decisive?
More hideous crimes have been committed in the name of obedience than in the name of rebellion.

I believe the GB is becoming more authoritarian. That's what woke me up. I've heard a friend say that if the GB told him to wear purple underwear he would wear purple underwear. That's step #1 of the small steps that allow one to commit atrocities. It doesn't happen at once. In the Milgram study the electric shock dosage was gradually increased. Psychology shows that people more loyal and more capable of doing wrong things the more they invest emotionally into something. Entrapment

I'm not suggesting that the GB would ever tell anyone to commit murder. However JWs like to believe that their members wouldn't be capable of committing such an atrocity. JWs are no different than any other group of humans and can sink to the same lows due to unquestioned obedience. In other ways JWs already show lack of affection when dealing with family and friends who don't agree with them. Studies show that good people rationalize cruel acts such as torture by thinking, "the reason I'm torturing this person is because he is bad or guilty... or I'm good so this must be the right thing to do." We see this rationalization with our shunning policy and gleeful anticipation of Armageddon.

Psychology class is teaching me so much. It's a core class, as I want to study medicine or biochemistry eventually. We were assigned to read about obedience. We looked at a world famous study by Stanley Milgram called Milgrams study. I encourage everyone here to Google it. The gist of the experiment is that he was able to get normal people to administer what they believed to be deadly electric shocks to subjects in another room. The people did this because as Milgram concludes "the key to their behavior lies not in pent up aggression but in the nature of their relationship to authority. They have given themselves to the authority; They see themselves as instruments for the execution of his wishes; once so defined, they are unable to break free."
Our textbook states "that for many, the demands of the role and the social pressures of the situation defeat the inner voice of conscience." This is scary, especially since the GB is telling us to obey even if instructions make no sense. Also these disturbing videos they are showing to elders frighten me. I know good people that will do inhumane things in the name of obedience to GB authority. The GB is encouraging elders to feel that they are in the role of Jehovah's personal judges. Wanting to live up to this role causes ordinarily nice people to become monsters like Saul. They fail to report child abuse because their bosses tell them not to. They encourage friends to die instead of taking blood. They tell grandkids they can't see their grandparents. I have no doubt that some and likely a good number of elders would be willing to kill and encourage others to kill if so ordered. The GB wants this type of obedience. Milgrams study shows the dangers of uncritical obedience. Sadly in some cases up to 90% of the participants followed orders to administer dangerous shocks albeit with great deals of reluctance and emotional anguish. Please read this study performed in the late 60s.

Has the Governing Body Become More or Less Authoritarian in Recent Years?
by cofty init seems to me that this is a no-brainer but i have been out since '96.. so based on your personal experiences what do you think?.
lots more - a bit more - just the same as always - less - a lot less?.
if you think more or lots more can you spot a time or event when it started to change?.

Literature is being dumbed down big time. It's on an elementary school level. This is because most of the growth is amongst uneduacated people. Almost all newly baptized people at my hall have serious mental/emotional problems. They cannot think critically and need an authority figure to tell them how to live their lives. I've never in my life had to ask an elder how to make a decision. they run to the elders to ask what color underwear to put on every morning.

Another Form of Cognitive Dissonance: Jehovah is Testing Us

I'm studying psycology at a local university. Today in class we went over cognitive dissonance and a case study of a doomsday cult. It's sad to see the cognitive dissonance among people I care about. When I point out things that are clearly wrong, they cannot refute my points. Their only reponse is to say that Jehovah is testing us. Its actually encouraging to see more friends questioning the GB. It appears that their recent attempts to crackdown are falling on deaf ears. Of course I had one nutjob in another congregation shun me even though I'm still an MS. Othere than that I've had multiple friends admit they don't believe in 1914 and that the GB probably is surprised we're still here. Sadly, as I mentioned before, they view this as a period of test to refine us. They can't admit that we aren't God's chosen people. I can see people becoming more apathetic and depressed as they battle the dissonance. It's like something I've never seen in my young life.
I'm loving school. Reading about doctors helping blind children recover sight by removing cataracts in impoverished countries makes me so eager to get out and help people live better lives instead of just telling them to wait. We can't solve the worlds problems, but there is so much we can do to make things better for everyone. I hate the deafeatist attitude I grew up with. I can't wait to finish my studies and move on!
