I just posted this on another thread but 1 billion is just considered a conservative estimate, meaning there could be more.
"The church has not announced an asking price but Tucker Reed, president of the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership, called $1 billion "a conservative estimate" for the Witnesses' real estate portfolio."

The same article was posted on Yahoo, just read it. Actually, 1 billion is considered to be a conservative estimate, meaning it could be more than just that

HAPPILY (NEVER) AFTER --a Story from my childhood
by Terry inhappily never after.

hers was a primal scream, cutting me with an icy blade of accusation..

Great story! I like the descriptions you put into it. Very chilling in the end. I think those are all questions we ponder about someone we know, at some point in life. Makes me wonder what did happen to Lily-May, even though this was long before I was born. -

I've known young people (and a few older ones) in my current and old congregation who have actually pursued higher education, including an elder and sons/daughters of elders, regardless what is said by the Watchtower. One person I know works in a medical lab now. But I've also came across some in the congregation that are really against higher education and talk about how it's pointless to go. An elder who gave me my study, for sometime tried to discourage me from continuing, without directly saying it. He didn't press on it much though. I haven't ran into any problems myself, and I'm still going to university. My mother always tells me what "goingthrutheemotions" said in the first paragraph, and she's a JW. It depends who you come across. The official statement is "no higher education" but there are those who still go.
However, I am always asked when I am going to finish. Or maybe that's what others do too, I'm not sure.

Esmeralda001,

Best of luck in your research!

Brooklyn Bethel Tours Through The Roof
by freemindfade inwas speaking with someone last night who just recently toured the us bethel's.
the brooklyn tour i heard was awful, very limited and disappointing and conducted by a local pioneer and not even a bethelite.
well from what they are telling the folks on the tour since the tm3 bit encouraging (guilting) people about going to disneyland on vacation when you haven't visited bethel, monthly tours went from 6000 to 16000!

I went on the tour in Brooklyn last year and this summer. There's nothing much to it anymore. You go on a couple of floors, walk through some hallways. The tour guide only takes you to different display boards along the hallways that talk about the organization like construction, different departments, GB helpers and things like that. It's not how it use to be where they showed you different rooms and factory machines. The only room you actually get to see is where they get tools and writing utensils. I did see Losch passing by one time.
The only entertaining part in Brooklyn is the Bible and JW history exhibit. No need to wait in line for that.

JW logo and symbolism
by Illuminated inthere's a recent thread regarding the jw indoctrination expressed on the net, particularly instagram.
from an outsider looking in, i noticed this when looking through jw instagram profiles.
it came off super cult-ish and robotic along with similar wording used as though everyone, male or female, is a stepford wife (watch the movie for those who haven't seen it).

Every religion uses symbols to appeal to people and their emotions. Symbols mean something to people. It's also part of the new makeover in trying to become more modern and appeal to outsiders. They probably think that outsiders will wonder what JW.org is all about and search it online. -

Illegal immigrants in the organization?
by silent ini had a thought today that might prove interesting.
i'm wondering if there are any illegal immigrants who are witnesses?
surely it would be a great position to be in as an illegal immigrant because you could play up your plight and prey on the sympathies of others within the congregation.
-
A.proclaimer
I know that some illegals can't do certain things like go to bethel or do construction for them. But congregations accept them and work with them. They get privileges. Just this assembly, I heard that many weren't going to show up when they were told to go to San Diego (about 2 he's away and going down south) out of fear that immigration would stop them along the way. So it was thought that they would show up at the next assembly in Long beach (45 minutes) instead, even if it wasn't assigned to them.
