curious if any of our eu-based members (especially those still in) have heard anything from official wt channels on how the organisation plans to be in compliance with gdpr ("general data protection regulations") by may 2018?

it's my understanding that religious organisations must comply, and that religious data is treated a "protected" and therefore subject to some enhance requirements.. specifically, how will they comply with the following requirements:.

you must disclose to the individual: what data you collect on them, why, and what you do with the data (including what other parties receive the data and what they do with it).

DOC, you have a point. I have a feeling though that this Data Privacy Policy will definitely need to be rewritten.

Something that GDPR is clear about is:
- Prior to a person's consenting to share information, the organization must be clear about what they will do with their private data. I don't think any JW is informed on the day of his baptism that such a thing takes place. As per new regulations, ideally the JW baptizer will have to get a "yes" to a question like "Are you willing to have your information recorded including hours spent, magazines distributed etc? Further, do you consent to have this information and associated comments shared between congregations when necessary?"
The current Policy saying that "....all Jehovah’s Witnesses have consented by virtue of their free and willing decision to become and identify themselves as Jehovah’s Witnesses." should not stand

- GDPR is also clear that any legacy private information stored by the Organization will now need clear (potentially written) consent. I am hoping this means that if they fail to obtain such consent, they will need to destroy data from those of us who are trying to disappear.

You're absolutely right Spiral. Point 7 in the JW DP policy can NOT stand in a typical GDPR Audit.

Clear consent about sharing data is a big deal in the GDPR Standard. Which is why Facebook revised its own DP Policy early this year to be clearer about what is done with data they collect (in my opinion, that's still not enough but that's another story)

GDPR definition of consent:

(11) 'consent' of the data subject means any freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the data subject's wishes by which he or she, by a statement or by a clear affirmative action, signifies agreement to the processing of personal data relating to him or her;
=> Article: 6, 7, 8
=> Recital: 32, 33, 38, 42, 43
=> Dossier: Consent

IT Governance goes on to give examples of lawful consent requests@

Signing a consent statement on a paper form;
Clicking an opt-in button or link online;
Selecting from equally prominent yes/no options;
Choosing technical settings or preference dashboard settings;
Responding to an email requesting consent;
Answering yes to a clear oral consent request;
Volunteering optional information for a specific purpose (such as optional fields in a form); and
Dropping a business card into a box.

Good point raised respectfulobserver. I cannot wait to see how this evolves.

Deadline for compliance is May 25 this year. Stiff penalties and fines are in the face of those that do not comply after that date (20million EUR or 4 per cent of global annual turnover, whichever is higher). Firms like facebook/ Google will be most affected. They are literally making money from nothing by selling our freely supplied data to targeted advertising companies at their interest. Also, GDPR breaches must be reported within 72 hours of an incident.

What Made You Decide To Finally Leave The Organization?

The fact that organ transplants were not allowed for a period of time and that was overturned at some point. I read about someone that lost a family member a month before the small “Questions from readers??” Section at the end of a Wt made transplants a personal choice. It was so little most people would’ve missed it. I was blown over.

I mentioned it at a meeting with elders I had for an unrelated reason and the college dropout elder said the WT was right to make that change because the technology had developed enough to clean blood properly out of organs and thUS it was a wise and informed decision.

But what about the family that lost a relative a month prior to the WT déçiding this. It’s amazing how people can justify lost lives with very little empathy and then call themselves God’s shepherds.

something just dawned on me today as i processed my assimilation into the real world (thanks to our new poster, @jester, giving me a major throwback to my first post).. when you're a jehovah's witness, you really are in some sort of la la land.

things which are perfectly normal are acts of eating from the table of the demons.

things which are horribly grotesque and extremely unjust are branded as "righteousness".

Great post Wakemeup!

Even after 6 years away from the org, my mind is still boggled about how intelligent, empathetic people can be turned to behave in a ludicrous fashion. But then of course - its' a cult!

It makes me wonder sometimes - did the founders of the religion actually decide ahead to introduce tried-and-tested cult methods within the organization, or did these rules, thinking/mentality evolve as time went on.

Visited My Grandfather

my grandfather is a longtime jw with advanced parkinson's.

on the advice of a good friend mine who is inactive but not "out" i went to visit him monday and we talked for awhile.

his health isn't well, but he was happy to see me.

Saethydd go see your grandpa again if you feel like it. There's very little anyone can do to shake a JW living in alternate reality I've realized. Focus is to take care of your mental health and do what you feel right in this circumstance.
