Satan is "bullying" you through family
by neat blue dog injust thought i'd share this ridiculous picture from a recent watchtower.
in recent years, the word bullying has been thrown around a lot, and often misused by instigators and subtle bullies themselves.
in this picture we learn that your loving family who wants to continue sharing a family tradition with you, who hands you a beautifully wrapped present with a smile on their face, is in fact bullying you.

Impact of GDPR on WT HQ and EU branches?
by respectful_observer incurious if any of our eu-based members (especially those still in) have heard anything from official wt channels on how the organisation plans to be in compliance with gdpr ("general data protection regulations") by may 2018?
it's my understanding that religious organisations must comply, and that religious data is treated a "protected" and therefore subject to some enhance requirements.. specifically, how will they comply with the following requirements:.
you must disclose to the individual: what data you collect on them, why, and what you do with the data (including what other parties receive the data and what they do with it).

Stuckinarut I’m with you - I’d rather let sleeping dogs lie and not kick up my status in the cong. The focus in the new EU regulation for me is getting them to acknowledge they do not make clear requests for consent to collect info. And they cannot share that information without consent.
Undercover elders here - would you let us know what systems are currently used to save publisher info online? Probably a tailor made wt portal? In this case Org must classify data identifying sensitivity levels, label them as such and implement controls to ensure policies are complied with. Curious to see how they do that - although it wouldn’t be much with the current namesake of a privacy policy. 😒

You have a point average joe. I’m hearing though that the data privacy policies cannot be wishy washy to an organization’s benefit versus that of an individua. Hopefully GDPR isn’t only chasing a commercial angle while overlooking less lucrative religious privacy policies
I did ask a consultant this morning how the audits will be managed and what certifying bodies exist for the purpose but with this regulation being so new we’re being told to have a “wait and see” attitude (while prioritizing compliance of course ;)
previous poster mentioned getting a journalist to cover this - that’s a great idea. U have my vote :)

DOC, you have a point. I have a feeling though that this Data Privacy Policy will definitely need to be rewritten.
Something that GDPR is clear about is:
- Prior to a person's consenting to share information, the organization must be clear about what they will do with their private data. I don't think any JW is informed on the day of his baptism that such a thing takes place. As per new regulations, ideally the JW baptizer will have to get a "yes" to a question like "Are you willing to have your information recorded including hours spent, magazines distributed etc? Further, do you consent to have this information and associated comments shared between congregations when necessary?"
The current Policy saying that "....all Jehovah’s Witnesses have consented by virtue of their free and willing decision to become and identify themselves as Jehovah’s Witnesses." should not stand- GDPR is also clear that any legacy private information stored by the Organization will now need clear (potentially written) consent. I am hoping this means that if they fail to obtain such consent, they will need to destroy data from those of us who are trying to disappear.

You're absolutely right Spiral. Point 7 in the JW DP policy can NOT stand in a typical GDPR Audit.
Clear consent about sharing data is a big deal in the GDPR Standard. Which is why Facebook revised its own DP Policy early this year to be clearer about what is done with data they collect (in my opinion, that's still not enough but that's another story)
GDPR definition of consent:
(11) 'consent' of the data subject means any freely given, specific, informed and unambiguous indication of the data subject's wishes by which he or she, by a statement or by a clear affirmative action, signifies agreement to the processing of personal data relating to him or her;
=> Article: 6, 7, 8
=> Recital: 32, 33, 38, 42, 43
=> Dossier: ConsentIT Governance goes on to give examples of lawful consent requests@
- Signing a consent statement on a paper form;
- Clicking an opt-in button or link online;
- Selecting from equally prominent yes/no options;
- Choosing technical settings or preference dashboard settings;
- Responding to an email requesting consent;
- Answering yes to a clear oral consent request;
- Volunteering optional information for a specific purpose (such as optional fields in a form); and
- Dropping a business card into a box.

I'm just WAITING for May 25 to come around! -

Good point raised respectfulobserver. I cannot wait to see how this evolves.
Deadline for compliance is May 25 this year. Stiff penalties and fines are in the face of those that do not comply after that date (20million EUR or 4 per cent of global annual turnover, whichever is higher). Firms like facebook/ Google will be most affected. They are literally making money from nothing by selling our freely supplied data to targeted advertising companies at their interest. Also, GDPR breaches must be reported within 72 hours of an incident.
Ok I just ran a search and apparently the Org has already got their legal team to come up with this: https://www.jw.org/en/data-protection-policy/
Can you believe among other things THIS is said:
""The organization of Jehovah’s Witnesses has a longstanding history of respecting privacy rights and maintaining confidentiality, even before the enactment of such data protection laws.""
*EYEROLL*
No mention that I noticed on how they treat data collected during door to door service.
A lawsuit has already been launched in Finland on this subject: http://www.dw.com/en/jehovahs-witness-note-taking-challenged-at-eus-top-court/a-42408206

Apostasy: The Movie - Directed by Daniel Kokotajlo
by darkspilver indaniel kokotajlo's new film apostasy has it's world premiere at the toronto international film festival in september 2017. apostasy.
family and faith come into conflict for two jehovah’s witness sisters in manchester, when one is condemned for fornication and the other pressured to shun her sibling.. this fresh, unadorned first feature from director dan kokotajlo carries an unmistakable note of authenticity from its very first scenes.
set in a jehovah's witness community in england, the film's strength and power lies in its directness.. apostasy depicts the growing rift in a family — a mother and two daughters — who are rigorously devoted to their religion.
