Another thing... power chords are usually what a piano player plays with their left hand. When you are playing "bassy" notes you need a lot of speration between them so they don't clash. If you play a full three note chord all in the same ocative in the first couple octaves of the piano it will probably sound bad. Play the same chord up a bit higher and it sounds great. The lowest 3 or 4 strings on a guitar are considered "bass notes".

JB how many guitarists are there? Perhaps one is playing power chords and the others are filling in the harmony. So when you play it at home you play the full chords to make it sound like the full band?

"I always thought people that used them did not know how to play the guitar or were lazy.?"
When I first starting learning to play... I figured everything that was easy enough for me to figure out must not have been very musical. Great musicans had this amazing skill that I couldn't match. If they played something I could emulate they must be useless hacks!
I have grown in persepctive now. I realize that much of the great music we listen to is acutally quite simple. As a matter of fact it takes a great musician to take something very simple and make it really sound good. It is almost like the sketch artists that can draw a likelness of you in 5 minutes. There is art in the simplicity. Also overly complext music is often usless wankery by the artest. Music is not a completition it is an art!
(can somebody explain how to do quotes here?)

Power Chords are not unique to guitars but maybe you don't know them by this name. True music theory suggests that a chord is any three or more notes. A power chord only technically has two notes. Ussually the root and the 5 scale tone above the root. To make it sound more full most guitarists will also play the octave above the root.
Put another way... you play a standard chord but you leave out the third. The third of the chord is what gives it the major or minor sound. Guitarists like the fact that they don't have worry about clashing with a major or minor sound. (if you play a major chord while everybody else plays a minor chord it will probably sound awefull). It also leaves more room for the melody or other instruments.
Take a C Major Chord for instance, you would spell it C, E, G. C is the root, E is the third and G is the 5th. If you only play C,G you are playing a power chord.

Now if I actually had the skill to go along with the great theory I know :) I know SO much more than what I can actually play well.

Assuming it is drop D tunning which I am almost postive, those would be some very disonate chords if it wasn't. Essentially they are all power chords(like most rock music). You have the root, then a 5th above and then an octave above.

do other religions change doctrines like the wt society does?
by sowhatnow ini just wondered.
i mean ok, the catholic church seems to make 'adjustments' more or less , by accepting previously held prejudices.
against certain things, like gays, or birth control, or rather tolerate it more, but is that a genuine change of doctrine?.

Don't want to hijack the thread but I feel I should answer a few of these questions....
Papal infallability:
Matt 16:18-19 (NAB)I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it. 19 “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven.”
You will also note when ever there is a dispute in acts... everybody gets a say, but when Peter speaks up it is considered decided. Also Papal infalitiblity was a major cause of the great east/west schism. So there was at least some understanding of this over a thousand years ago.
Infant Baptism.
Acts 16:15 Acts 16:33 1 Cor. 1:16 all speak of baptising entire housholds. No mention of not baptising children. We baptise babies becasue baptism takes the place of circumcision and babies where circumcised.
Baptism by sprinking
The word for baptism in biblical text is used for emersion AND sprinkling. The bible never tells us specificly how to baptise. We are just told to do it in Jesus name, or in the name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit. Also the new testiment speaks of baptising thousands at a time in the Jordan river, that river is just a creek it would have been very challenging to do all of them with immersion. Also it is unlikely that you would dunk infants as a form of baptism. Catholics believe in full imersion baptism as well, when our Church is done being renovated, we will have a baptismal font to allow for immersion baptism.
"Sign of the Cross"
That is just a prayer that many Catholics do. It is not a doctrinal thing. Don't all believers say prayers that arn't directly found in scripture?
Eucharist
As to when and how we recieve communion (The cup and/or the bread) that is a practice or tradtion of the Church. Again nothing doctrinal.
Marriage to non Catholics
I don't know enough about this one to comment sorry.
Immaculate Conception of Mary
Luke 1:28 (ASV)And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee.
Sometimes it is rendered as "Hail Mary, Full of Grace" both translations are not very good here. The word used is Kecharitomene, it is not used as an adjective instead it is a title given to Mary. The title means complete or perfected in grace. A much better reading of this text would be "Hail, full and complete in grace, the Lord is with you..." We just add Mary in there to make it read better in our language. How could Mary already be full of grace before Jesus was even born and probably before he was even conceived?

As a Catholic let me clarify insidetheKH comments. I don't think the Catholic Church has ever changed doctrin. We believe once doctrine is set it is set forever. Practices or customs of the Church do change to suit local cultures and customs and the changing times. Those three Doctrines that insidetheKH mentioned where always belived but where not clearly defined. Some doctrinal conflict arose that pushed the Church into defining those doctrines in a dogmatic fashion. In all three cases there is ample evidence that Catholics believed those things before they where dogmaticly defined.

Simon would you consider an open handed smack to the back of a young childs hand, or an open handed spank to the clothed backside abuse?
Also the disipline you suggests works well once the child is fully verbal, not so well before hand though.
