Why do religious people make claims and then refuse to back them up?

several times over the past few months i have had conversations, both here and in real life, with religious people making all sorts of interesting and conflicting claims.

i like to know how things work, so generally i will ask questions to net out what i am being told and see if it can be explained and make sense.. for instance, if someone said 2+2=4 and i asked how, there are a variety of ways that could be shown to me, a number line, physical objects being put together, counting on fingers and toes, etc.

indeed, in my personal life, i often have to explain how certain technologies work, sometimes planned, sometimes off the cuff, from a variety of group sizes to a varying degree of technical expertise.

Your argument is biased, and does not account for all the murders and blood spilled that man has done in just developing one weapon of mass destruction. Take the nuclear bomb that was developed to drop on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Do you realize how many lives were sacrificed in the name of science to test and develop that weapon?

What does any of this have to do with religious people pretending to know things they don't?

Which is a sanitized way of saying they had a belief and subsequentfaith that it would result in proving their initial calculations. But even with all the scientific methods they employ, they were incorrect, as they would not have misled the residents initially.

Also, do understand that faith is not unjustified belief, you could not be more incorrect on this matter and would do well to realize that the science in which you “believe” is based on theory and hypothesis, and there are many unproven postulates an all areas of scientific study.

You clearly don't understand science, so I would question why you pretend to do so.

My point is that somehow having a theological view got entwined with ignorance and an illogical thought processes. This is quite frankly offensive.

You take offense at reality, then.

And when we are discussing the origins of the universe and life, I am sorry but at the end of the day, science (actually the political) answer to the question is just as silly as that of a creationist. We are all hypnotizing and looking to prove them.

Another case of proving you've no idea what you are talking about.

I sincerely hope you don’t need faith to believe in that the next vaccination or inoculation you need to get, because the fact is you surely do, especially when you do not know the outcome. You may have some idea based on statistical analysis, but there is no guarantee or assuredness, and that my friend is still blind faith.

And as is sadly typical, theists end with attempting to equate their non-sense with actual knowledge and tell other people what they think and totally get words wrong on what they mean.

You've just proven that you are illogical and ignorant (meaning "lacking knowledge") on the subject you write on. You may find that offensive, but it's objective reality.

so a friend of mine who is still in and knows i am disassociated sent me an email saying the following, "hey, did you see the new article about disciplining your children?????

there is not one single outright mention of beating your kids anymore.

no mention of the r"rod of discipline"!

'Clergy' and 'Ordained Ministers'

what i can't seem reconcile are the concepts of 'clergy' and 'ordained minister'.. the wts has consistently won legal battles, specifically in cases involving military exemption, by making the claim that each and every baptized jw is an 'ordained minister'.

and, they bolstered this label with the assertion that 'we do not have a clergy class'.

so, why is that different now in the sex abuse trials that happening right now?

And yet he was the first person OT. I was agreeing with someone and was on topic, yet I am the person you took issue with. Why is that? What did I say, specifically, that was egregious or OT that offended you and why did you find it offensive?

Question for people who believe in Evolution

though school i did religious education and my teacher who was religious ruled out evolution because humans are the only creatures who do not want to die, can anyone who understands evolution explain this?.

im 99% on to the theory of evolution, this is just the last stumbling block..

Although if proven, not only will it dispel the notion of creation, but evolution to. The conclusion that man achieved the God Particle would imply the existence of a higher being. Not God, Perhaps a Theoretical physicist a singular genius with a God complex, and he has been playing with creation for over 100,000,000 billion years according to Degrassi’s insight of the universe, and it took our species (MAN) this long to conclude the same.

That is some weapons grade wharrggrrble right there.

Is this from something or are you having wine? Because it's making me laugh either way. I might just start answering my unreasonable relatives this way.

So, now that I am back to my normal self (normal for me, anyway), "Because Jesus" is an answer that is often used when people use the Bible to support ridiculous positions. For instance, when someone says they are against gay people because they are a Christian, the answer can be summed up as "Oh, you've decided to be a moron and a bigot because Jesus". The reason that works is because they are completely misunderstanding their own holy book and religion.

For instance, when Michelle Bachmann, a former congresswoman from Minnesota, says that the president of the US is a secret radical Muslim that is bent on arming Iran with nuclear weapons and destroying Israel and that will usher in the end of days, we can safely say she is saying stupid things and is an idiot, but we say it in a sarcastic manner, like "Oh, well yeah, that makes TOTAL sense, because Jesus", at which point we roll our eyes so hard they detach from our optic nerve and fly out of our skull to escape the stupid our brain just ingested.

Basically, it's used when people invoke being Christian as an excuse for being stupid, bigoted, hateful or someone else unsavory. And it's used snarkily.
