  i've always wondered that.

  recently i asked that question on another thread and didn't really get ananswer.

  cofty made an excellent point that we often hear what it isn't, but that really isn't useful.. so, what is it?

  Yes and no, jgnat. That, of course, would be lovely, but in another sense, I am fundamentally trying to raise a question about how it can be absolutely asserted as true that something exists, can exert power, influence thinking, physically interact with the world, experience emotions and be killed and yet cannot be be described in any fundamentally meaningful way.

  It's not the same as dark matter or energy as villagegirl attempted to suggest. Those are hypotheses about what could exist given the discrepancy between observations and functional mathematical models, similar to the discrepancy between quantum and relatavistic physics. Dark matter and energy is a name given to something that could be loosely described as "something that we don't know what it is that appears to be having a large scale and measurable effect on the structure of the universe". The implicit response and understanding of that is we DON'T know what it is and it is being researched very diligently.

  My answer, as well as a few others posted, are relevant to the question, as commonly defined by Merriam-Webster at least.

  You misunderstand the question again.

  Everything else is just metaphor that STILL is not telling anyone what it is. That's telling us what it can be used to mean.

  If an angel is made of spirit, what is that spirit stuff? It's a quite simple question that no one who asserts it exists has been able to answer.

  viviane since you want facts - not theory, not concepts, not imagination, not emotion not relativity, not intelligence - just facts, I'd say that spirit is all of those things that you don't seem to want. Hows that as a summary of the where you seem to be heading?

  It's a terrible answer. First, it ignorantly asserts things about me that aren't true and that you couldn't possibly know, namely, what you imagine I don't want. Secondly, if that's what you really are saying, you could have just said "it's a metaphor" and left it at that.

  I’m sure that true but I still think that waves and particles are mutually exclusive in terms of comprehension.

  I often hear people admit they are ignorant of a subject and then proceed to say what can and cannot be true about that subject. It's a curious event, to be sure.

  By George you've got it! Now you're starting to understand the word spirit. It's an all purpose word to refer to things people know/believe exist but can't see and haven't the faintest clue what it is.

  No, you've got it. I've know that all along. That was the point of asking. Welcome to the club!

  What makes you a living thing? As is opposed to a dead thing? What makes living things live? What makes them alive verses dead?

  One thing about this site that bothers me

  the constant references to 'window washers' as something derogatory.. i understand the context of it-that most jws are uneducated, and unqualified to do much more.

  but sometimes the references seem snobbish, almost mean-spirited.

  one poster, on another thread, essentially referred to window washers as 'losers'.

  I don't want to derail this thread and I don't have the time right now to explain wave/particle duality and coordinate probability and coherence and collapse, I wasjust suggesting that if you really are interested, there are some great resources online to look it up :)
