We'll make it. I have a lot of faith in human ingenuity.
- We got through the first hiccups of the Industrial Revolution, and we are no longer choking in coal dust.
- Hygiene and systemized health care has changed society forever. We will see the eradication of some of the worst diseases ever in the next twenty years.
- This generation of youngsters value life and our planet more than we ever did. Racism will become an anachronism; multi-racial children are the new cool. We'll cut back on rampant consumption. Naturalism is "in". I get dirty looks from my daughter when I guzzle an aspartame-laced fizzy drink.
- Modern politicians won't make a move without monitoring public opinion. Another hard-won lesson of this century is that people do have the power to topple a government who forgets to take care of them. Wars can't be maintained without strong public support. The horrors of the world wars and the first atomic bomb have permanently affected mankind's psyche. We're afraid of complete anihallation, now that we know we can. We won't ever use it.
- Nature? We can plan for natural disasters. Early warning systems. Emergency planning. We are getting better at this, too.

Life in 1968 was far worse, as I posted earlier.

Well is it really? Much recordkeeping only happened in the past 100-200 years. That leaves some huge gaps after Jesus's death. True, things may be the worst in the past 100-200 years but it may be nothing to unrecorded events that transpired in the missing 1800 years prior.

shoot, forget about the the last 2000 years...i heard this planet was a LOT worse for billions and billions of years. (it was real hot. oh, and not to mention the half dozen earthwide glaciation events over the history of the planet. hurricane? bah. at least we're not swimming in a global pool of lava.)
we're fantastically fortunate to be living at the very beginning of an extremely recent trend in which the planet is even remotely habitable.

I was talking to a customer yesterday who has a wife that will call him on the phone all upset when she hears something through the media indicating the world is falling apart.
His response: "Do we still have enough time to go to a movie?"
