    Here are some excerpts:

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true.

The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

“We should not expect to find in Scripture full scientific accuracy or complete historical precision,” they say in The Gift of Scripture.

But the first 11 chapters of Genesis, in which two different and at times conflicting stories of creation are told, are among those that this country’s Catholic bishops insist cannot be “historical”. At most, they say, they may contain “historical traces”.
In the document, the bishops acknowledge their debt to biblical scholars. They say the Bible must be approached in the knowledge that it is “God’s word expressed in human language” and that proper acknowledgement should be given both to the word of God and its human dimensions.

They go on to condemn fundamentalism for its “intransigent intolerance” and to warn of “significant dangers” involved in a fundamentalist approach.

“Such an approach is dangerous, for example, when people of one nation or group see in the Bible a mandate for their own superiority, and even consider themselves permitted by the Bible to use violence against others.”

they refute the apocalyptic prophecies of Revelation,
The bishops say: “Such symbolic language must be respected for what it is, and is not to be interpreted literally. We should not expect to discover in this book details about the end of the world, about how many will be saved and about when the end will come.”

I am a tad confused by this ,so why do they have a no sex clause for priests and where are they getting their rules to follow if it is symbolic? How do they decipher what is real and what is symbolic? Just my wittle mind asking questions.

One caveat, the pope doesn't seem to be in on this. So, it may not be considered as totally binding, which is as it should be.

They are saying that parts are symbolic, but the salvation doctrine is still unchanged. The church originally determined what would make up the contents of the bible, meaning that the church considers itself an authority higher than the bible if it wants to. I'm not that knowledgable on things catholic, but i would imagine that there are still lots of church rules that remain unchanged.

From what i understand the priesly celibacy rule was invented by the church to keep church/priest property from leaving church posession. Money was the bottom line.

It's mind boggling how they decide what is symbolic and what to them is true . They seem to pick and choose what they want to believe. Sounds so familiar .

This is just a minority group, I think. The overall group of catholic scholars don`t share these "new lights". It`s not so uncommon, in Norway we have a (protestant) priest who dont believe in God! - and I believe there is one in Denmark too.

How do they decipher what is real and what is symbolic?

There isn`t single christian sect/group in the world that doesn`t interpret some things symbolically, and some things literally, and what they choose to interpret symbolically, and what to interpret literally, is often very arbitrary. They come up with an overall theology, and then there are always some parts that don`t "fit in", and these passages are interpreted symbolically. JWs are no exception.

Agreed Hellrider . That is why any religion to me is just a few views that all are to follow . Basically ,the heads are the interpreters and the flock is to follow.

You know, that's what I sort of find cool about the Catholic church, that they can have elements like this that challenge the establishment and things just sort of roll along and it gets dealt with eventually. Can you imagine a group of CO's, DO's, or elders trying something like this?

They may as well throw the Bible away then!

Why add to this "unreliable library of books" by ADDING APOCRYPHAL as well? They really are stupid!

It has been like that since the beginning of the bible compilation.
