    Greetings JWD Forum:

Been a while, so I will say "Hi" first and state that I do read here almost every weekday at lunch. I especially enjoy Mulan and Crumpets posts. Ok, so I was raised in the 'borg, (in the 80's) never baptized, did the "fade" in high school. I go to meetings about 6 times a year. So I have heard of Bethel, Crooklyn Heights, & Gilead. But to be honest, I don't think I've ever heard of "The Farm" up at "Patterson". The post last week or so about Patterson which had a link in it to a site with pictures of Patterson, really caught my attention. I had never seen or heard of this place. I can definetly say I have never "seen" it - EVER; Period. I was completely taken aback at it. I mean, it is one thing to have a modern office building in NYC to deligate work, brochures, literature, etc along with corporate offices in order to run things. This Patterson place is entirely another. It looks like some elaborate temple built to be the WTS headquarters after Armageddon. I mean, what the heck is that place for? How come no one ever told us our $$$$ was going to build that palace while I was in the JW's??? Why are we never offered to take tours there? It's like it is in some kind of veil of secrecy. If the society can afford to build and upkeep that fortress which is entirely unnecessary, than surely they can afford to help JW's get out of jail in the 3rd world countries? Also, I think they could also afford to build retirement communities for JW's, as well as community centers for activities? Surely, the allowance I put into the contribution box as a child would have been much better spent on such things, instead of some elaborate palace that I didn't even know exist, and which does NOTHING to benefit me or my congregation. I feel totally ripped off by a place I didn't even knew existed! Unbelievable. This makes me wonder how many other JW's don't know this place exists?

Anyway, thanks for the info and keep it coming.

I figured every JW knew about it. It wasn't secret at all. And yes, you can take tours of it.

WC, if you were/are a JW, you must not have listened very well at the Service Meeting.

Patterson was just a small farm in 1985. If a JW left around then and had little contact with the WTS or representatives, they would probably not know.

I think it was started in 1991 and dedicated in 1999.

    Dear Wing,

As mentioned, it is not a secret, depending on whatever congregation you go to, many of the friends get very excited about it and talk about it with great delight. You can take a tour as mentioned and if you were active you would of even had an opportunity to offer temporary work there as well. I think many young ones participate in such activites so that they can meet a mate.

I am not exactly sure of all the operations that go on up there, but I think the goal is to eventually have most of the work that was once done in Brooklyn, NY to be done at Patterson. I am sure that with the money they make on selling a building or two in Brooklyn, NY this would go along way in paying for many of the things they have at Patterson.

I agree it does seem like a compound where they serve coolaide...LOL.

I took the tour of Bethel in 1976. They talked about the farm, where they raised their own vegetables, and beef. So I always knew about the "farm". I am assuming that Patterson is the farm. Is it?? HL

    The "farm" is Walkill/Pine Bush.

Right, the facility at Wallkill (really the mailing address) but closer to Pinebush was known as the Farm. Actually there were 2 farms, one where the printing facilities are and produce was grown and farm 2 where the cattle were raised.

I understand that few farm operations exists at either location and that "the farm" is more correctly called Wallkill based on the number of times JWs I know correct people.

Patterson was never a big farm operation, mostly dairy and had only about 5 to 7 Bethelites assigned to it (until the expansion).

No printing is done at Patterson that I'm aware of; supposedly the DVD/video production was supposed to be moved there but all I heard was silence about that. Although Gilead was moved there, the number of students has increased only from about 25 to 50. Some training of the COs, DOs, and branch overseers takes place there but all in all for such an expensive complex, little seems to be done. I think of it as a retirement community for the GB and other older Bethelites.

It was. One of the top brothers who supervises the video production lives there along with his wife. Carl and Naomi Zahari. They also get to travel the world when doing the videos. Rough life, eh?
