The laws about transferring money are tighter now to prevent money laundering and terrorism so being completely anonymous is not easy. They best you can hope for IMO is for some link in the chain to not give out your details other than to the authorities for these reasons.

It's perfectly legal to have bank accounts in other countries - we have a Canadian account in preparation to moving over (incodentally, opening it only took 10 minutes and I walked out of the branch with the cash-card ... it takes much longer in the UK where I live !)

(Oops, I inadvertently posted a reply to my 'Anonymous domain name registration' thread here.)

I've already tried Paypal--it's good, but it's definitely not anonymous. If you want to receive funds, you have to enter your real name becuase it has to be the same as the account name of your credit card or bank account. When someone sends you funds, Paypal sends them an automatic acknowledgement / receipt, which has your real name on it.

Even if receiving funds wasn't an issue, and are only interested in making payments, you still have to pay funds into Paypal, and that leaves a paper trail.

    Nathan Natas,

I would suggest that you open up a NEW bank account that is not the one you use to pay your mortgage and household bills from, and use that account only for your Paypal adventures. I would also suggest signing up for a new credit card to be used the same way - ONLY for paypal. For either account, it might be nice to have a post office box or a private postal company listed as your address.

Devious, aren't you? Don't let me get on your bad side!

Don't you have to produce a utility bill or something when opening a bank or credit card account, in order to prove your identity? Any problem if you're not a US resident? Can you do it online?

    Elsewhere,

When I tried your www.internetcash.com link, I got a 404. I then tried the home page and got Methacton School District. Seems something funny is going on here!

What a shame, it looked very promising. I'll look into some of the other options you suggest. Thanks.

    LittleToe,

Actually it's not illegal in Britain to open a bank account under a pseudonym. As long as it isn't used for nefarious means it's quite legal.

True, but the bank still knows your real identity and address, so it's not anonymous.

    Nathan Natas,

Could an American citizen open a British chequing account? Would the Bank expect a UK address?

Probably. British banks aren't fussy, they'll take anyone's money. Getting it back is another matter, though...

    Simon,

It's perfectly legal to have bank accounts in other countries

That's what I'm starting to think about. Know any countries which don't require you to prove your identity?

    IT:

Actually, it's not just for legal reasons I want to be anonymous, but also to avoid congregation judicial action.

Which is why I suggested you "phone a friend"

Let their name and address be cited on the documents and payments, while you pay them in cash or somesuch. If they are from another part of the country, or indeed another country, so much the better.

    Nathan:
I'm not sure how easy it is for non-nationals to open an account here. It can be a rigmarole for us, far less remotely.

Thanks for checking. It works ok for me too, today.

Incidentally, unfortunately it looks like their system is still under development...!

When you create your Paypal business account, it does ask you for your name. All you need to to is to enter your business name into the first/last name fields. I've had one like that for yrs. I have a personal acct as well. I've tried sending and receiving payments in both accts. but never does my name appear on transactions linked to my business acct. I have a bank acct in the same business name so maybe that's why.

I think no matter what there is a potentially traceable paper trail with $ transactions. If you are wanting to have absolutely no paper trail, the only way I know how to do that is to register at the free sites, don't register a domain name, enter a pseudonym in the registration fields, do it on a public terminal so your ISP address can't be traced. (Of course once the host is contacted by the Legal Dept., they will take your site down and you'll have to repeat the whole thing.)

To be totally James Bond-ish, wipe the keyboard clean of your fingerprints afterwards, wear a hair net to ensure you leave no hair follicles behind with your DNA, go to the public computer in disguise, and wear a tin foil hat to ensure no one is tracing you by sattelite.

    I didn't realise that. Thanks.

Maybe what I'm looking for just isn't available!
