While I was in the Pentacostal religion, I was told that women should always wear dresses, and that they shouldn't wear make-up

Again its that blanket word "Pentecostal" everyone who is Pentecostal must be the same as the church you knew.

Have you asked the women at work if they have to wear a dress, maybe they don't like wearing trousers or jeans.

I know many women who work in my place and do physical labour and wear dresses and they are not Pentecostals. How many housewives clean, cook and work around the house wearing a dress? Are they all Pentecostals? I remember my sister decorating a room wearing a skirt.

I have never heard of a Pentecostal church say women should only wear dresses and no makeup.

Plenty in my Pentecostal church come in slacks, Jeans and wearing make up.

It wouldn't matter what "religion" you looked at you will find some churches will have such petty little rules. Usually made up my their own local elders or pastor.

I know of churches, not Pentecostal either or JW, were the men must wear only white shirts and suits for church. They would have a fit if they came to mine, men dress in anything from suits to soccer kit.

I read on this forum how JW brothers had to wear white shirts only. Yet in my 20+ years as one I never wore a white shirt for a meeting or giving a talk. JW women had to wear a skirt/dress for meetings or on the ministry. But I knew plenty who wore jeans at home or slacks to work.

Again I have discovered it came down to how the Elders in different congregations viewed things and made their own petty little rules. Mainly to stamp their own authority on a congregation.

Ms McD, I much agree with you in the holier than thou bit. Much of the reason I have developed some strong antichristian feelings over the years has to do with certain people's superiority complexes. When I wrote a letter severing ties with my JW parents, I sent them some CD's of music I compiled that was theme appropriate. One disc in particular was about "the church they rode in on", and this song came to mind when I read your post. It's called "Holier Than Thou" by Metallica, here are the lyrics; No more! The craps rolls out your mouth again Haven't changed, your brain is still gelatin Little whispers circle around your head Why don't you worry about yourself instead Who are you? where ya been? where ya from? Gossip is burning on the tip of your tongue You lie so much you believe yourself Judge not lest ye be judged yourself Holier than thou You are Holier than thou You are You know not Before you judge me take a look at you Can't you find somethig better to do Point the finger, slow to understand Arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand It's not who you are it's who you know Others lives are the basis of your own Burn your bridges build them back with wealth Judge not lest ye be judged yourself Holier than thou You are Holier than thou You are You know not Big Willy

Why don't you come on over to America and visit the church that my mother goes to. I can show you several others if you like.

Now, we've likely met some genuine saints in our lives too, people who give and give with no thought to themselves. What are they doing different from the "holier than thou" people?

Now that one's easy. They are being nice.

Aniron, check out this web page:

The UPCI also adheres to standards of conduct that are similar to the standards held by the earlier Pentecostal Churches at the start of this century. The members are asked to refrain from participating in or watching movies, worldly sports and amusements. Dancing and public swimming are seen to be unholy, and so is the wearing of immodest dress, make-up, jewelry, short hair on women, and long hair on men. (Burgess, p.864)

Your comment has really touched my heart:

I don't think that I can be a religious person, especially if it means you got to be holier than thou!
I can not be a religious person either because religion is mankind's attempt to reach God while Christianity is God's attempt to reach mankind. Since God has always, as recorded in the Bible dealt on an individual basis with humans (Abel, Cain, Enoch, Noah, Ezekiel, Mary, Peter, Paul, John, Timothy, etc.) I see nowhere in His word wwhere that has been changed and he is now dealing collectively with any organisation or group that claims Him as their God.

How about being a spiritual person compared to a religious one?

Cant let this one go by!!!! 1st let me say!! I know many Pentecostal folk -who wear slacks all the time -in fact MANY support my ministry & I AM NOT- read >>NOT religious!!! I dont attend a church, ( though I have just an hour ago come from teaching about the JWs in a Lutheran Church...)
I too believe organized religon can be harmful to ones health... I know -I was a JW 25 years then got into the Coonites!!!!!

If any one here can PROVE to this old woman- that the wonderful universe came into being with out a creator.... I am open.... Dont give me any mans ideas just tell me how the lovely flowers, trees, animals wonderful sights came into being

I am not out for disagreement ---I love GOD!!!! to me he is JESUS!!!( Father ,Son & Holy Spirit ) I have a personel relationship with him--- How just by prayer... Well you might say "your nuts" I will agree but it is much happier place to be than where I have been....Sorry you feel that way sweetie ((((HUG)))

Now you can all kick my butt ((((SMILE)

    "No man's ideas" mouthy?

What do you call the bible then? LOL

The Romans thought that their Gods made sense of the world. So did the Greeks. So did the American Indians. Now-a-days the thought of Neptune controling the seas seems novel, and the simpletons that believed that.....well....quaint.

In 1,000 years civilizations will look back at our history and wonder how in the world people could believe such nonesense and find it "quaint". However, they will probably group Chritianity in with headhunting tribes, and the Aztecs as being an extremely violent and cruel religion.

    Just my $ .10 worth.

Big Willy, did your parents listen to Metallica? That would be something to see! LMAO The lyrics are, definitely, saying what I'm thinking.
