We had a dear ol' brother in our congregation who had started new congregations, been faithful for such a long time. He had smoked his entire life. He could not kick the habit when the powers that be said he should and was disfellowshipped. I heard about this long after I left and felt so sorry for this old man. JW's are heartless people.

Many studies have proven that it is tougher to quit smoking to some people than it is to other people. This poor man was probably among the group who has an extremely hard time to kick the habit. I bet that they told him he didn't love Jehovah enough and that's why he couldn't quit. Such statement would discourage anyone..

There was a great thread last year about how this sudden prohibition destroyed the livelihoods of many Witnesses in the South who were employed in the tobacco industry and were forced to divest themselves of their jobs, stocks, interests, etc. Anyone know where that thread is?

I'm surprised nobody has made mention that publishers used to smoke during the break after the public talk and before the Watchtower study began. It's hard to imagine this was EVER allowed within the Organisation.

If old man Rutherford was REALLY running the show up in heaven.....he woulda let us at least smoke fer christ sake! I'm thinkin Freddie and Schroder killed the guy and buried him six feet under the clouds.

And if you give into smoking, you get disfellowshipped and lose your friends and family. All over a habit that is not mentioned in the Bible. Talk about going beyond the scriptures.

Oh it's in there little missy! The bible tells us our bodies are "temples" and we're to keep it holy. Do like me, I exercise, eat plenty of fruit and poop once a day, take my vitamins, and never eat fatty foods. Jesus ain't lettin no overeaters and unhealthy people into his kingdom. If you don't look like Jack LaLane.....you ain't gettin in! Gumby

For decades the publications of Jehovah’s witnesses have warned against the use of such addictive products as tobacco

Addictive Products? Is this selective? How many know of JW addicted/dependent on prescription drugs? ( Possibly as a result of BEING a JW - lol)

Addictive produsts? Hypocritically the Awake makes it clear that if your addicted to (their) magazines, then its ok!

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Awake-2000-12/8-p. 32 “I Am Addicted to Your Magazines” A letter recently received by the Watch Tower Society’s branch office in Germany read in part: “I must admit that I am addicted to your magazines. It’s the same story every year. Just before going on vacation, I decide to hold back the last two issues for reading on the beach. A firm decision! “But as soon as I get my hands on them, the problem starts. Just a peek at the table of contents. Wow, a life story! Well, maybe I’ll read it just as an appetizer but nothing more. Oh, but the next article looks especially interesting. Stop! I need the magazines for vacation reading. Oh well, just one more article. And the “Watching the World” items are always so informative! Finally, as you can imagine, by the time I get to the beach, there is not a single article left.”
