    G'day all,

Sorry we're a bit late for the downunder mob, but you in the regions of the northern hemisphere may still be enjoying your weekend.

Misspeaches: you could read this when you get to work in the morning, eh?

Anyway, as promised in an earlier thread, it'd be amusing to compare notes on this one:

What part of the magazines did you look at first?

    1. The covers

    2. The Letters in the Awake!

    3. The 'Watching the World' in the Awake! (hey, I had to get my education!!)

    4. QFR (I'm guilty!)

    5. The study articles (yuk!)

    6. The secondary articles

    7. Anywhere there might be "new light" hiding!

    8. The life stories (hmmmm)

    9. Never did.

    10. Other (do tell!)

There y'are folks, happy reminiscing. We're waiting in keen expecation of the end ......of our waiting for replies!

    Enjoy!

    Cheers, Ozzie (permanently upside-down class)

A toughie Ozzie - torn between 9. Never did, but IF I did 2. The letters in the Awake - just to try and judge if any real unedited people ever got a look in

WHEN THEY HAVE IT, I ALWAYS LOOKED AT THE 'QUESTIONS FROM READERS' IN THE WATCHTOWER. THAT WAS WHERE ONE COULD FIND 'NEW LIGHT' AND/OR CLARIFICATION ON SOME CRAZY TEACHINGS OF THE ORGANIZATION.

THE BIGGEST QUESTION I HAD WAS, "WHO WERE THE READERS QUESTIONING'? I WOULD SUSPECT ALWAYS, SOMEONE AT BETHEL!

AND ANOTHER THING. WITH AN ORGANIZATION OF MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, WHY WASN'T THERE QUESTIONS IN EVERY ISSUE?

Usually the contents first... to see if there was anything worth reading in the first place. If an Awake! had any recipes in it (which occasionally they did), that was the first stop. Then back when they had crossword puzzles... that was the second stop. After that, only if I needed the information for talks or school research.

    1. The covers Hard to avoid, but I would wonder, "What is the article really about?" "Why this picture?" I toured the area that chooses the covers and was told what "care" went into their selection but to grab the attention of the rank and file or the public at large? 2. The Letters in the Awake! Only to see if someone called them on the carpet about a point that had bothered me and knew that the public at large would be offended.

    3. The 'Watching the World' in the Awake! (hey, I had to get my education!!) The news is regurgitated enough in general. The WTS picks articles that support their views and then makes editorial comments.

    4. QFR (I'm guilty!) After the unavoidable cover, that's where I went.

    5. The study articles (yuk!) Just to flip through but I did highlight strange statements and buzzwords (even then)

    6. The secondary articles After the QFR to see what paragraph or sentence I could use to segue into the publications.

    7. Anywhere there might be "new light" hiding! I would stumble on it eventually.

    8. The life stories (hmmmm) Sanitized and tweaked just like the experiences on the conventions/assemblies.

    9. Never did. Know your enemy.

    10. Other (do tell!)

This topic made me stretch my brain. It's been so long since I read one.

In the Watchtower, secondary articles; never read the study articles until I had to (and I studied for most Watchtower studies).

In Awake!, the cover articles, because those were what I would be presenting in field slavery service – and especially if there were anything remotely progressive-sounding.

First, i always look at the Watching the world. I always liked the pictures when i was little. Then i scan the table of contents page to see if there is a "young Peoples ask" segment. Lastly i look at the "comments from our readers" section. I never read an awake front to back. I only pick out those three parts and if i find an article thats interesting i'll read it.
