There is a need for some metal guitarists.

    Dave Mustaine-Megadeth
Played faster, louder, did some amazing things with guitar.
    Kirk Hammett-Metallica
Idol is Jimi Hendrix, some may say he is better than Jimi
    Joe Satriani
Like TR said, probably is the best
    Jimi Hendrix
    Angus Young-ACDC

Hey, where would Sid Vicious fit in?

For the ability to play a guitar with emotion I have only two. Eric Clapton and Robert Johnson. I'll bet no one here knows Robert Johnson. He's a black slide guitar player that died around 70 or so years ago.

Many here listed are super talented such as Satriani and they could play licks faster than anyone, but sometimes I felt as though it was so perfect that I was listening to a computer. I want to feel the music. Someone that can hold or bend a note just right really makes the song for me.

    LB,

I have heard of Robert Johnson, but I've never heard any of his music. I'll check into him some more.

I think Satriani is a true artist. He can play as fast as anyone, but to me he is never gimmicky. His music has tons of soul and emotion. Check out the songs Cool #9 and Rubina, if you ever get a chance. He was the one who really launched the (now dead) guitar-wizard genre that was popular in the mid to late 80's. So many imitators, he was/is the real thing (though his newest release isn't all that great ).

My ear says Satriani is ALL gimmicky. That's his stock in trade. Not that it's bad...

Surely, Joe's sonic aura is built upon mind/finger manipulative tricks of dexterity, two handed hammer gimmicks and nimble "Floyd Rose" crying dive bomb calisthenics. He is ALL speed and gimmicks. That's what makes him Joe.

If you want an electric axe with some grindingly sincere sloppy chops that hit the heart with raw emotion, I believe Neil Young does it pretty well.

I say John Denver (just kidding)

Stevie Ray & Clapton get my vote.

    And of course Dickie Betts

Jimi Hendrix. I saw him in person. Maybe that is why I have a hearing problem today. But he was good. Can anybody remember when he opened for the Monkees?

J Mascis from "Dinosaur JR" is an amazing guatarist - it's progressive/alternative music

George Lynch from DOKKEN - later Lynch Mob - is amazing as well.

From my near 800 CD collection those are the 2 that really stand out to me.

    I won't comment on 70's guitarists because I don't listen to that.

    TT

I just saw David Mustane from Megadeath - he's great as well though their last 2 CDs have sucked IMO.
