I was just wondering you know whether in bethel workers get credited with whats called in Britian national insurance.
In Britian you carnt miss six years of payment and expect a full goverment pension which isn't much anyway. Also you cant claim full income support , sickness benifit or job seekers allowence if you have missed or underpaid you NI.
This came to mind as my wife worked for a company that didn't pay contributions for her .
When latter on she lost her job the goverment wouldn't pay her any job seekers allowance as no NI contributions were credited for that year.
So does bethel pay NI contributions for bethelites and circuit overseers and the like.

If you're asking if the WTS gives the Bethelites a pension, the answer is no. It is my understanding that once they're through with the Bethelite, they're through with them. Can the retired Bethelite get a SS check from the government? Yes. Which is never enough to live on. It is so sad how these people have no money to retire on. They've spent their whole lives giving to an organization that will give them nothing in return. So glad I left with my youth!

A Bethelite would only receive Social Security retirement money if he had paid into the system. If you haven't paid the tax you don't get a check.

Certain disabilities can qualify you for Social Security Disability, or SSI, whether you have ever worked and paid into the system or not. This pays a maximum of $532 per month.

An old ex-Bethelite is mostly SOL in the USA.

State welfare and disability assistance varies wildly from state to state. Food stamps are usually administered by local welfare departments but are in fact a whole separate system under the Dept. of Ag. In Ohio you gotta register to work and either take the first job offered, or work for the county in a workfare program, to get any of these for more than thirty days (or have proof of disability.)

And of course we have no National Health anything, and state medical assistance programs(and the providers that will serve them), although most children can now get basic preventive care mostly free, also differ widely in different states and even counties.

My husband has an 86 year old aunt who was a Special Pioneer for about 70 years. She now lives with his brother and her Social Security is almost non-existent because she has never earned an income.

She is getting violently senile - but it takes money to go into a nursing home. I've tried to get her caretakers to call and find out about Medicare (or Medicaid - I get them confused), but they haven't.

I believe that's the way it is too. I get a statement from the SS people saying what I've paid in over the years - and what my expected SS income will be - and it's not very good. And I've worked most of my life.

A jw woman I spoke with (long time pioneer) says her statement says she'll get $300. a month.

    Sleepy,

It doesn't make much difference whether you receive the standard old age pension or not, it will simply be topped up to a reasonable survival level by the Income Support people.

Its also whats paid to the 1000+ asylum seekers that smuggle themselves through the Channel tunnel each month into England.

Thats the problem with being regarded as the Best Country In The World. Everyone wants to live here, especially Norwegians.

I know that the Society's not paying into Social Security or pension funds was an issue in France and an accusation the Society addressed in one of their tracts.

Apparently, not wanting to pay social security taxes and other taxes was one of the reasons the printing facility was moved from France to Englishman's "Best Country in the World." Here is a letter I found on the "Comments to the Friends" site:

    Dear Brother

Please don't use my name. I'm still inside.

In France too, like Germany, we have been encouraged to get registered on the voting list (excuse my so poor American) and to vote (blank, that is to say not putting a sheet in the envelope). (I speak of POLITICAL VOTING.)

This week the congregation were adviced that the printing plant of France (just inaugurated) would be transfered to England because of the government who said the workers don't pay the charge for the retirement [fund?] and social security. (Difficult to explain to you.)

Watch Tower is the same [as] international companies who put out workers to find cheaper ones in another country.

    What a shame.

There is a big decrease in France this year (more than 2% since September).

Please no name — God bless you

Since the recent reorganization of the corporations in Brooklyn, I believe that Bethel workers now take a vow of poverty. According to Social Security Publication 517, this exempts them from Social Security tax on their meager earnings. I would also assume that if they do not pay taxes on these earnings, they will not accrue credits toward a later social security pension while working at Bethel.

Bethelites were taking a vow of poverty as long as 20 years ago that I know of. I don't think it is a recent thing. At least in the US.

So MONEY is the hidden agenda behind the ``voting is now a matter of conscience'' ploy by the WT? What a surprise!
