I can't find the thread now, but I posted "Have you ever talked to Jehovah's Witnesses" on ship-of-fools.com. The responses showed that maybe 40% had never even spoken to them, though most had at least heard of them. There were a few comments along the lines of "nice people", plenty of "they aren't Christians", and some that felt a need to de-convert them when they come to the door.

JW's are a legend in their own mind, but not in the world at large. (Surprise, surprise, eh?)

It really is interesting isn't it BT. For all the work they do peddling their literature for over a century their reputation is definitely not what the WTS tells them it is.

My boyfriends parents where JW. He had a screwed up childhood because of it. Now he doesn't believe in God.

I think that it's pretty presumptious to try to convince people that your way of life is better than mine. I used to have some pretty persistant JWs come to my house and try to get me to see their light. Both were extremely overweight and not very articulate. I usually told them how I felt, but was polite. The last time they came to my property, I was not so polite. I started bagering them about converting to my religion (BTW I made up the religion on the spot). That didn't go over so well with them. They haven't come back.

A few things about this little survey. This isn't very scientiific. But it sure is interesting. And for most of us it isn't a surprise.

Some of the flaws:

it doesn't represent a cross-section of people. The fact that this is a small test sample of people who use computers means that we won't be considering people who are not on computers.
The sample is small. For a good cross-section we would need hundreds of responses.
We have no idea what the background of the respondants is or their religious affiliations

By asking you to post on NON-religious boards

I have tried to factor out boards where people have a really strong opinion about religion. I am an hoping to get the average person.
By asking you to copy and paste the quote I have tried to even out the responses and not have people inject other information that could slant a person's response.
I had no way of knowing who we would be asking to participate.
And I had no idea how they would respond.

You would think that after 100+ years of preaching "the good news™" there would be a slightly more positive response than what we have seen so far.

OK I am floored. One of the sites has taken my question and started a new discussion. He has made two comments

I believe that Jehovah's Witnesses are mislead by false prophets and false doctrine.

When they come knocking at my door I try to save them from their cult. They argue for a while but then they simply turn away never to come back.

On the plus side they dress nice.
