doesn't this happen every other year? I thinks it's a matter of the amount of people that are there. Millions show up and problems happen. It's sad but happens. It's hard to keep crowd control with so many people.

A muslim said to me that many muslims consider it a privilege to die at the hadj. It's usually the older people that have this wish. I don't know what the official view is. And I don't know if people go there secretly wishing to get trampled to death.
hmmm....could be. I've never heard of this before. I'll ask some friends and my cousin. My cousin attends a nearby mosque and asks around whenever I give him questions.
It's so awful for those who die/get hurt or get seperated from family and friends (neighbour's aunt and uncle went with family the other year and the elderly mother got seperated from the group for about 36 hours and no-one knew if she was alive or dead). But yeah, I suppose they die happy and their families get some comfort from it... :\
If it's not a stampede it's fires ripping through tent accomodation. I know it's an incredible amount of people who go, but you'd think there'd be better stewarding - especially given the fact there's *stones* being chucked about as a matter of ritual.
What ridiculous and reckless things people do to make their invisible sky-daddy happy.
well...it happens with anything glitter. Rock concerts are notorious for crowds stampeding or not having enough security for the amount of people that show..
I'm aware that stampedes and crushes can happen anywhere, we had 96 Liverpool football supporters die in my city due to serious errors in policing and dangerous fencing.
It still doesn't make the stoning part of the Hajj any less stupid or the Saudi authorities any less feckless.
This really pisses me off. It would be different if it happened once and they said, "Whoa! We need to change something". But every damn time they have this little stone-fest they end up killing a few dozen of their fellow worshippers.

glitter & AA...I understand what you're saying. but I've been hearing updates from CNN one 40 minutes ago and one about 5 minutes ago saying the deaths have been attrubuted to a stampede. I would say it has to do with crowd control. I think this is the final day of stoning but I could be wrong. But seems people are trying to get up to where they need to be in order to do what they need to do and security isn't there to help it move along in a smooth manner. The year before last it got out of control. Last year people were patient and no lives were lost. Think security lagged off this year.
I agree it's to do with crowd-control, but I still think it's idiotic and very sad the crowd was there in the first place.
