I always find it amusing which topics you guys get all morally superior over.
One of the most popular myths is that welfare is a serious drag on the economy. Actually, it barely registers on the radar screen. The most vilified form of welfare is Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), which allegedly gives poor mothers a financial incentive to avoid work and have babies. Yet in 2000, AFDC formed only 1 percent of the combined federal and state budgets. Food stamps also took up 1 percent. WOW! A whopping 2% of your tax dollars went to support "poor folk".
Why don't you bitch about corporate welfare which consumed almost 5% of the budget hmmmm?
That's right, you can't feel smug about not taking assistance from the government. Carry on!
How do you feel about people on government assistence?

i live off of less than 500 bux a month disability.
i must be retarded, i cant afford to buy food and tampons, i'd like to see how anyone finds beer and cig money in that!
i live in horrible pain because i cant afford a dentist.
i have to pick and choose what prescriptions i can get each month now that medicaid dumped me and i have to use the new medicare presc. plans..
yeah life is real fun on this gravy train..
fyi my tv is a 15 yr old 19 inch.
i take care of someones finances on the puter because he's housebound..so he pays for internet service..
why am i feeling defensive? oh i guess cuz a big percentage of the above posters want to see me wiped off the face of the earth because i'm wasting their massive contributions to the tax base
just remember, ANY of you can end up disabled..it only takes a moment in time to wipe out everything you have worked for in your life. i had 2 homes, a business, 4 cars, ......... paid a shitload of taxes for many years.
trust me..it can all disapear and leave you with no alternative but to go on disability or other govt assistance. dont look down on the poor to harshly, you might find yourself looking in a mirror someday.

Well said Candi
I think the topic of this thread should be changed to "How do you feel about excessive government military expenditures?"

Personally, I think government assitence is ruining our country.
Well, personally I think the lack of real government assistance is ruining our country.
We've now spent over $234,000,000,000 on the Iraq war.
Imagine how that could have been used to increase the quality of life in this country.

Funny how quiet it gets when you mention welfare is only 2% of spending. Where's all the moral indignation now?

Personally, with or without the war, this money would have never come back to America as so many people like to imagine. People think this money was just sitting there and we decided to send it to Iraq. In reality, we are spending money we do not have and if we had not sent it to Iraq, it would have most likely been used as foreign aid anyway. We spend a lot of foreign aid projects. To make our country stronger, we need good quality programs that get people off government assistance and into the work force. People who work, have reason to live and purpose.

Yes, that's probably true.
But, the money has been spent. And on a war that was arguably completely unnecessary.
The fact that the government, and many of the citizens of this country would never consider spending anywhere near this
amount(especially money we don't really have) on health care and other social services, is to me the real problem we face.
Not a bunch of (insert color here)-trash welfare freeloaders.

Would you seriously take any job you could get? No matter how low paid it is?
I have had to take what I can get at times. It was either that or starve. There is nothing wrong with taking a lowly job you feel you are overqualified for. At least it is work with some compensation until something better comes along. It looks better on a job application than a bunch of gaps in your work history.

If I ever need it I wont worry about it.... I have been employed for 30 years now and figure I should get some taxes back.
I find that those who need the help the worst seem not to get it....Hit the right circumstances and say, you loose a job... UE insurance pays for 13 weeks and it sucks to find out you wont get an extention. Then your age/experience/education/wage history makes you either : over or underqualified to get another job.
If you go on UE you wont see a check for nearly a month....maybe thats why some folks work "under the table"?
That Cobra (bridging insurence)? What a joke...the time I needed to do that it was going to cost me $800 a month... I went on the market and bought major medical for a couple of months and paid less.
You may find out that you will not qualify for many programs because you still own real estate or just made too much money this year already.
SSI may take months to start up... and may take a lawyer to make it happen.
Abusers will be among us always... I dont think the Government will ever fix the programs.

I have not read all replies, (but will) however, I read your first few sentences and hardly think your sample size is large enough to be a viable study of all people who receive assistance. It is very common to believe that most who receive assistance are deceptive and lazy. This is just not true. It is not that easy to get assistance and many people walk the streets homeless b'/c they can't figure out the paperwork involved to apply for aissitance. Social Security Disability is difficult to get, many often give up.
This is just another example of sterotyping people. . There are so many people who need help and can't qualify for various reasons. Perhaps you should pray you have your judgment with more mercy than you extend to others.

The situation Candid is living in is much more typical of what is really going on with people who are disabled etc. Most live a lot like what she describes. Most would give anything to be able to work.
