Going in a different direction here...I was watching the NFL interviews for the upcoming games on Sunday. I was kind of surprised at all the players and coaches saying that the reason for their being there was due to their faith in God. (Most of them gave God credit for their success.) During the games I notice that quite a few players go to the sidelines and pray...they seem to sincerely believe that God is helping them. Most of these guys have been to college and so are familiar with the "no God" concept. Why do you think that so many have such a strong faith? Do you think that the mental meditation is what helps them to play better, but they attribute it to God? Love to hear your comments!!!

Swalker, the funny thing is, they never get mad at god when they lose. They never say"thanks alot god for letting us lose. We prayed and bowed to you and you STILL let us lose". Many times they feel it was warranted god LET them lose as they feel had they done things correctly, god would have seen that they won. Besides...if god DID indeed have a hand in football games and boxing matches.....wouldn't that be cheating? Unfair? I would think an athlete would want to win on their OWN merits, not by winning because the supernatural made you win. Gumby

Maybe we aren't supposed to just "figure it out".

I tend to think, that spirituality is a bit more of a lifetime path or journey.

A person who is an athiest today, could perhaps be a priest in 20 years.

A person who is a devout Baptist, could be practicing Islam in less then a year.

A person who was a jw might say they'll never lose their faith in God. Yet, by the time they end their intial visit on jwd, they're doubting what the tetragrammaton is even supposed to mean.

Perhaps, rather then worry today about a single absolute faith in one path, we should be open to all possibile realities. Be open to the meditation and the mediation.

Trying to prove the existence or nonexistence of the supernatural world has and probably always will consume much of mankind's time and energy. Think what we as the human race could collectively accomplish if we'd use that time and energy to accomplish something positive, and at the same time set aside all the competition, moral indignence, and emotional/physical violence that goes along with religion. (not that it has to go along with religion, but it does)

    Imagine there's no Heaven....

Perhaps it is a matter of divine revelation rather than scientifically acquired knowledge, to know whether god exists. Even though the world around us teaches a lot of things.

It's like taking chicken soup when one is sick: Hey! It won't hurt you!

    (Neither will believing in God)

    Yup... religion never hurt anyone.

    (1) Belief in God does not necessitate religion.

    (2) Nationalism is a religion, too.

    (3) Racial supremacy is a religion.

    (4) Many people who believe in Allah have never killed anyone.

    (5) Many people who believe in Jehovah have never killed anyone.

    (6) Many people who believe in Jesus have never killed anyone.

    (7) Many people who believe Buddha achieved Nirvana have never killed anyone.

    (8) etc.

Belief in God doesn't kill anyone any more than guns kill people, or fallen tree branches kill people, or machettes kill people, or golf clubs kill people. Except for accidents or natural disasters, people kill people.

    Respectfully,

Perhaps what they are thankful for is not just winning, but for having been given a gift (talent) and then using it to the best of their ability. If that helps them win, then maybe it's just icing on the cake. When I shoot a wedding or have a photo session that is just perfect in every way, I AM thankful. I am thankful to God for giving me a talent and for giving me the thought and strength to do the very best I can with what was given me. I do believe without Him, I would have nothing. And I'm incredibly grateful for that!

    GOD......................................................................?

For anything to actually be real..........to actually BE...............to exist.....it must possess identity.

    Existence is Identity.

    Consciousness is IDENTIFICATION.

The chief disaster befalling mankind is the deliberate attempt by man to avoid the law of identification: A thing is only what it is and not what we would like for it to be otherwise.

A person or a thing is only what it actually is.

GOD is a concept. But, to exist GOD must possess identity.

Giving the Concept of God a name (Jehovah, Allah, etc.) is merely to put a label on an empty folder.

Consciousness is required for identity. There is no God consciousness; it is only man's wish.

It pains me to see all these topics trying to figure out whether a God exists or not.

I do not think a lot of us are trying to prove that there is no God. Some topics are more a prove that there is no need to a god. Which topics can be very important IMHO.

It is not possible to figure it out. It's like taking chicken soup when one is sick: Hey! It won't hurt you!

I do agree with you that believing in God doe snot have to be harmfull. (we can not blame some extremists for using religion in a harmfull way. Politics and whatever is used in the same way)

But organised religion has the tendency to limit people very much. Limit people in different way, limit progress, limit free thinking, limit acceptance of other opinions etc.
mainstream JW is certainly is, mainstream islam, mainstream hinduism are certainly like this.

Christians were like then, now a lot less. For many people it has become much more individual. I do not see a lot of wrong with that
