Honestly, I don't think it's much different than in the secular world. There are good and bad employees, honest and dishonest businessmen. But then, I guess that's the point - it SHOULD be different and we were told repeatedly how DIFFERENT we were, but the truth is that is simply not the case.

My ex-father in-law owned several contracting/construction related businesses. He got the point that he was very reticent about hiring JW's for many of the reasons mentioned already. One thing he had a real beef with was, even though he was a pretty staunch JW, that his JW employees would spend half their time trying to 'informal witness' to their co-workers - and even count their time while he was paying them to work. They seemed to think that just because he was a JW that he wouldn't care. He had many JW's file worker's comp on questionable cases. One brother he hired had a previous injury but was given a job because he was in need. He ended up repaying that kindness by claiming that his injury happened on his current job and actually sued my ex-father in-law over his worker's comp.

I guess in all the Bible-quoting that the JW's do, they forget the scripture "neither a borrower nor a lender be"....I've seen a number of cases where JW's lent money to other JW's and it turned out badly. Not a good idea. Of course, for the most part, friendships and lending money aren't a good coupling....

It would probably be easier to ask who HASN'T been ripped off? We won't hire anymore witnesses because we got screwed over one time after another. They mostly just did lousy work and when you call them on it they blow their stack and think you should just STFU about it since you're all in one big orgy jw witness happy family. I know one life-long JW woman and she won't hire any JWs because she says they're all crooked to do business with. I could go on and on. Interesting thing is it's all been the older diehard witnesses that ripped us off. The young ones seem to follow a different tune and have no problems with, but they're mostly my friends too so that's maybe the difference. ;-)

I sometimes think that the WBT$ provides some of the best “tools” for the best of cons. Take for example the well known, justified and broadly accepted excuse JWs have for Divorce – UNFAITHFULNESS - and how that concept can be used to easily extort money and goods.

I consider my ex wife a great con, who married me for my real estate equity and some thrown in worldwide travel (my business took me around the world) and then, when the asset value in real estate and material things was high enough, simply cashed in by inviting three elders and her father over to the house (without telling me), accused me of being unfaithful by passing around my underwear at our dinning room table and crying her little eyes out. Even thought the surprised elders said that she didn’t have enough evidence, this little “act” was enough to convince her father, family and friends that I was unfaithful and I was immediately thrown out of my house of 7 years never to return, locks changed, restraining order filed against me and “at the end of the day” she received ½ of all “our” personal property and a nice big fat check for $20,000!!!

She ended up returning to her hometown, where she was greeted “with open arms” as the victim. In this episode, I lost my wife (who, up to then, showed no signs of betrayal and I considered her my best friend and lover), my house, her family and those JW friends who chose to believe her story. The elders even sent a letter to her new KH saying she was in good standing!

Am I still angry, hurt and bitter even though this happened 15 years ago? – You bet I am!!!

    HiddenQuestioner,

Welcome to the boards! You have taken your first step into a brighter world.

Welcome to JW justice. You must have 2 witnesses to 'convict' a pedophile, but she can lie and take you for 1/2 with some bogus evidence. Although, there's no way someone would lock me out of MY house....lol.

What did she use in court to prove it? Or did she have to? Some states automatically award 1/2, regardless of the reason.

Stay away from the 'loving Christian congregation' () and find some REAL friends.....

Thank you for the kind words. Here's some more info........

"Although, there's no way someone would lock me out of MY house." Answer: I was on an out of town project at the time and had to leave. It was when I returned that I found myself locked out and legally unable to be in or near my house.

"What did she use in court to prove it? Or did she have to? Some states automatically award 1/2, regardless of the reason." Answer: Yes, I was in a no fault state where you automatically get 1/2. Her legal reason and filing for Divorce was for " irreconcilable differences". He JW reason was; I was screwing around, which I wasn't.

I was caught a few times when I was young and innocent, thinking it was the truth.

One of the most depressing was my own brother(jw), while visiting my non jw sister and her husband on their large property, decided to let his 10yr old daughter drive the quad bike with him on the back.

Of course they crashed into a fence and my bro in law rushed them to the nearest hospital. They are a lovely country couple who did everything to make the family comfortable while bro was in hospital (minor injuries, broken nose and abrasions).

They were repaid by this low life with a law suit. They were beside themselves with grief but had plenty of assets to get high profile legal advice.

    He got zip.

    Ab. true story.

    Doofdaddy,

That really is a depressing story. No doubt it must have been embarrassing for you too.
What was your sister's take on it.

I worked for a MS-Elder small business partnership briefly. They gave me bouncing payroll checks and never once paid me the commission they owed (which was supposed to be about a third of my pay). I eventually was able to cash all the checks they did give me by outsmarting them, snooping around to find out when they made their deposits and cashing my checks right afterwards. The MS got mad when he found out and confronted me, but I told him it was morally wrong not to pay me and I would continue to cash my checks in this manner. When I realized the business was about to tank and the owners were never going to pay, I ordered as much resellable stuff as I could from the suppliers and took it home with me. Then I told the owners I'd keep it as a partial payment. hee hee

Then I won a sales contest sponsored by a supplier. I won a bunch of frozen turkeys, which were going to come handy since I was about to be laid off and wouldn't have enough $ to buy food. The supplier called and arranged delivery of the prize on a day I'd be in--Monday. The elder found out and got the supplier to reschedule the delivery for the weekend when I wouldn't be there. He took the turkeys and had a giant party with his dub friends with my turkeys, and refused to make good on it when I confronted him. I told him it was stealing and the bible says he should make full restitution, but he just ignored me. The only regret I have is not turning them into their body of elders.

Didnt get ripped personally, but we had one smooth operator, who sold aluminium siding. He took the customers money and ran. He was a study fast tracked for greatness. He left town, popped up somewhere else and started his study again.
Next thing he is in some photos in an Awake! magazine.
Imagine trying to place that one to some of his ripped off customers!
    Probably an elder somewhere......

They never ripped me off but I know of a ministerial servant who sold a defective car to a young JW girl while fully knowing the problem was there and she had to pay a lot of money to fix it, something like £700 or $1200.
