Once a brother told me that he knocked at a door, and it was a Catholic priest who lived there, and that brother thought that he knew his bible better than that priest, so he showed him a couple of verses to prove that the JW's had the truth, but that brother didn't expect the priest to know his bible that well, and the brother didn't win his biblical debate...

Wouldn't it be fun if more people knew their bible really well, and could use the bible to make the JW's go away...

Gee, I hated that when I knocked at a door, and the person would go get their bible, and I saw that they had a decent knowledge of it... Usually I left quite fast.

I called on a young youth minister once who really knew the Bible and the history of JW's. He showed me so many things that made my blood run cold. I showed my husband some of it, and another elder. Unbeknownst to me, the two of them were doing their own investigations.

Somehow I was able to shelve all of it for a couple of more years.

    JH,

    Oh ya.....plenty of times!

Witnesses know only of scriptures the society throws at us/them to read which scriptures they twist to fit their weird agenda's/doctrines.

    Matt 24:14, Ps 37:10, 2 Tim 3:16, Rev 21:3,4 etc.

When a householder quoted scriptures that countered our message.... we didn't consider it worthy of attention or figured they twisted it to fit their babylonish thinking. Witnesses only know scripture that defends their doctrines.........not scriptures that share the REAL message of the bible, that being the message of grace through faith in christ.

No. But then again, until I came out I didn't know that JWs didn't teach that Christ was everyone's mediator. I knew the Bible, I just didn't know I was never actually one of Jehovah's Witnesses.

There's a big difference between knowing and understanding. The JW kind of knowledge is one that gives them a huge advantage over about anyone in the silly game of doctrinal debate. It's all about proof-texts and explaining away the opposite proof-texts -- probably no one is better at that than the average JW.

I remember once two fellow pioneers were stuck in a discussion with the Catholic principal of the local high school: apparently they could not answer some of his objections. I went back with one of them. He was a very nice man, well educated, with good knowledge of ancient Greek (I had none back then). We had hours of discussion, and I had the last word on everything (including points of grammar, which is quite laughable), just from repeating the WT arguments. When I took another view at this, years later, many things this man had said came back to my mind. I then could see how right he was and how wrong I was. Still on the spot I had "won".

    Here's one I remember. Rev 5:10

After I read a scripture showing their will be a heavenly government OVER the earth, a householder pointed out to me only our bible says OVER and not ON THE EARTH as do other bibles. I dismissed his ideas as I felt "how could this wordly misled man of babylon the great know something the FDS doesn't know". I just figured there was a logical answer and didn't ever feel the need to check it out.

When I was 15, we were working out in Service one day, and the territory we were working was the street where the Catholic church was and of course, the priest lived in the attached house. We were sort of apprehensive about knocking on his door due to our age, but we did anyway. In due course, it became quite clear that he knew very little of what was in the bible. I was quite shocked as I really expected him to know more than me. We got talking about the Trinity and I asked him to show me some scriptures in support of the Trinity. He either couldn't or just didn't feel like it........it was a very bizarre situation. Although when we were about to leave, he commended us on our knowledge of the bible, given our youth.

What use to make my head spin what when someone DID know the bible better than me........I remember being at the door with an older sister and we got some guy who really knew what he was talking about. I think we were placing the ever-embarassing Revelation Climax book. When this guy started talking, I thought "wow! that makes alot more sense than what we were taught!" The older sister I was with was getting angry because she could see I was actually listening to what he was saying and it became clear that our interpretations were insane and he wasn't biting. She ordered me not to go back there (gee, can't imagine why).

I met a priest who did know his bible extremely well, but I was WELL indoctrinated so I could counter everything he said the JW way. It amazes me that I was that talented in something, I didn't stick with. Maybe I should go back. NAH!!
