Is religion the only guardian against real individual development?

Won't there always be those who just have gross wits?

Heheh... There is, of course, always that.

I do think that for many, exoteric religion is the farthest they will ever get. No offense intended to anyone. I think that there are those who do progress a certain amount within the constraints. They find some amount of contentment with what they have found and then rather stagnate where they are, believing that they've overcome the challenge, not comprehending that there is always more. I think it a shame that too many never get beyond that.

Which nicely leads me back to my usual contention, that religion can be a useful stepping-stone. However, once the aim has been attained, to continue to have it bear all your weight can demonstrate just how slippery a stepping-stone it can be...

At best religion is the hand pointing at the moon, rather than the moon itself, and may be used as a useful tool for communal "work". At worst... well, I don't even want to go there
