Prince and Tamar to perform in Minneapolis MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Prince has announced to fan club members that he's performing Saturday at the Orpheum Theater, but he didn't give himself top billing.

Prince will appear as a Prince will appear as a "special guest" of R&B crooner Tamar Saturday in Minneapolis.
    By Kevork Djansezian, AP

He will appear as a "special guest" of Tamar, the R&B singer who recently performed with Prince on NBC's Saturday Night Live.

Fan-club tickets sold out within minutes, but more seats will be made available through Ticketmaster for $50 each.

Tamar has a Prince-produced debut CD coming out March 21, the same day the 47-year-old rocker's new CD, 3121, is released.

The pair have two more concerts scheduled — in Chicago on Monday and Philadelphia on Wednesday. Prince has given himself second billing on previous shows with Tamar.

His last shows in his native Twin Cities were three dates at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul in June 2004, part of his Musicology tour.

But while Prince howls and moans in his signature sexy falsetto, don’t get your hopes up. After all, Prince is a reformed man, or at least a Jehovah’s Witness. Prince still is a sexpert, but now it’s just a tease. Often it seems as if he uses his seductive powers for religious conversion. “Get on the Boat” is the most up-front song in this gospel. Although he never directly mentions Christianity, the song sends the message that once onboard, darkness will turn to light and we’ll all love one another. (Wait, Prince, are you a Jehovah’s Witness or a Scientologist?) On the title track, a relaxed groove that begins the album, Prince tells you to leave your clothes at the door, slip into a Japanese robe and drink champagne from a glass with chocolate handles. Maybe it’s not your average gathering, but considering it’s Prince, it sounds relatively tame. But then he slyly mentions that once at the party, you never can leave. (Will you be serving Kool-Aid as well, Prince?) The most bizarre and freaky song on album, “The Word,” has Prince singing “Don’t U wanna know The Word? Who’s gonna save us when them spiders get next 2 U?”

But if you can get past the boat, the cult party and the spiders, “3121” contains plenty of classic Prince moments. Songs such as “Lolita” and “Incense and Candles” aren’t exactly revolutionary, but they recall Prince in his ’80s heyday. And no one does Prince better than Prince. The highlight of the album clearly is the single “Black Sweat.” The song has a similar stripped-down, dancy feel as a song like “Kiss.” But the grimy beats and electronic hums give the song an updated Neptunes-like spin. Unfortunately, “Black Sweat” is one-of-a-kind on the record, and although the classic purpleness is good, it leaves us wanting more 2000-sex-era Prince. This is the problem with “3121”; it gets us all worked up with no climax. Prince’s religious conversion hasn’t turned him into a eunuch, and “3121” is plenty hot and kinky, but come on, Prince, there’s only so much foreplay a girl can take. The formerly freak-nasty singer is still sorta salacious, but he's apparently adopted a look-but-don't-touch lyric policy, now that he's a Jehovah's Witness: "I know you're fine, from head to pumps/ If you were mine, we'd bump, bump, bump." But, he adds of the song's young subject, "Lolita, you're sweeta', but you'll never make a cheater out of me." I promise not to stray, either -- as long as Prince is back to sounding like Prince for good......

Sometime during the late 70's, a fellow classmate turned me on to Prince. I went and watched him for a cheap show, like $7, at Denver's Rainbow Music Hall. This was shortly after his album Dirty Mind came out, and I came out of that concert a bona fide, hard core Prince fiend. I was enchanted with his mix of street funk, sexual identity conflict, blatant sexuality, and spiritual overtones. Somehow, even though these things seemed like they couldn't ever TOUCH each other, or even get CLOSE to one another for fear of contamination, his music brought them all together in an arousing mix of sensual, erotic, spiritual and close music that touched the primitive parts of even the most die hard rock fans, and made them seem all related to each other.

Forget that he played *all* the instruments on some of his albums, forget that he sang all the songs, produced them, wrote them, that was nothing compared to what the music DID to you. His musical forays into parts unknown: combining modern funk and street rythyms with gospel and anthems, his muscial style in the early 80's was just unknown and a little bit off the beaten path. But it wasn't what he did with the music, it was how it affected you, that's what it all boiled down to. Even though the music was very different, it was the way it made you feel. It made you feel sexy, primitive, and strong. It made those primitive voices that call us from deep down come to life. It made them say "This is how I *really* feel* and this is what I want to do about it!" It made you feel bold, beautiful and strong. That's what I remember most about hismusic from that time.

I've always thought that he was a musical genius. It just seemed that his music the last 12 years has been forced. He hasn't been himself. With "Musicology" I see a little bit of Mr. Prince coming back, with 3121, Mr. Prince is back. From what I hear, at the British music awards for the year, I don't know what they are called and maybe someone can confirm this, I understood that he played his old songs with NO modification. Of course, I can't verify that since I wasn't there. I also read that he has been performing his old songs without modification around the US, trying to regain his stature.

I am not sure if he just doesn't believe the JW crap anymore, or if he wants to reclaim all the money he lost during the time he was being involved ina cult.. but it seems to me that he is back on track, thank god. I've just been hearing a lot of stories that he's performing his old songs with the lust-n-gusto that he did before, and I'm so glad. God gave him the musical genius and he should make sure that he uses his talents for all its worth!

WOW Prince has got the dub double life of hypocrisy down pat! The theme switches in the final third of 3121, with Prince taking the album out of the bedroom, off the dance floor and into the church. It’s seems an unlikely final destination, but if anyone can do it, it’s Prince, who in the past 20 years has both released a song entitled “Pussy Control” and become a devout Jehovah’s Witness. Evansville Courier & Press (subscription), IN - 3 hours ago
... The now-modest Prince, a 47-year-old converted Jehovah's Witness, more overtly espouses his morality and religion on "The Word," "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed ... It’s hardly surprising that the first half of 3121 finds Prince in a naughty, raunchy state of mind. Sex is a ubiquitous part of Prince’s persona, and he seems to be making up for the fact that this motif was scaled way back on his last album, Musicology, by offering up tracks like “Lolita,” a crunchy, synthesized tribute to underage lust that samples funk and pop sounds and conjures up memories of the classic Purple Rain period.

Lyrics like “imagine me on the tip of your tongue,” on “Lolita,” sound positively subtle compared to the hypersexual “Incense and Candles,” on which Prince really gets down and dirty, singing “come into my room of incense and candles / I’m gonna give you something you won’t know how to handle.” He keeps this sensuality going on “Black Sweat,” on which he implies that his perspiration has more to do with the bedroom than the gym.
