Sherry, I care about what you believe because I care about you - honestly I do, I care about this whole family on JWD. For the past five years it has been where I have found company, refuge and stimulation. When I was down others here supported me.

I'm not really a proselytizer for atheism....hmmm, I do come across like that though don't I? Maybe I should ease up a bit but I do feel strongly about this. I know it's not the only way, faith works for so many and if you are one of them then I am genuinely happy for you.

    Brigid:

    No reason.

    No emperical evidence.

    Just had to agree.

Sounds like you're a very "spiritual" person.

I'm one of those who needs reasons and empirical evidence to believe. Do I think this makes me superior to those who believe based on "faith"?

Actually no I don't, but I do believe mine is a superior method of obtaining knowledge. So much so that I think that beliefs based on verifiable evidence are always, without exception, better than beliefs based on revelation or faith.

Of course, if your goal is something other than having a worldview that closely corresponds to reality you may prefer to get your beliefs some other way.

Nic, thanks for caring about me. Its what keeps me civil when anyone tries to convert me. Plus you seem to be a cool person (anyone who likes Wallace and Grommet can't be bad!!)

Anytime anyone touts their way as the ONLY way, you know its time to run like hell.

Here's a resounding "Amen!" from the Amen Corner, Sherry!!! LOL! I was once told: it's none of MY business what others think of me...........

    Funky Derek,

<<but I do believe mine is a superior method of obtaining knowledge>>

Maybe you'll believe me, maybe not, but I agree with you. I think that scientific method is a superior way of learning about the facts of the universe that surrounds us. I simply make a distinction in my personal life between facts and truths. Please believe me, I defer to science more than I defer to one person's spiritual coloring of the world when it comes to anything outside of my personal way to life. I hope that makes sense.

I just think that for me, mythos makes my life better. The last thing I want to do is impose my beliefs on anyone else. I love that we're all different (except that maniac who cut me off in traffic earlier--he can go to bible god hell--jk!!!). Conversely, I do not wish to have anyone imposing their beliefs on me (even the atheists had their day of trying to stamp out religion with the former USSR). It does not work on either front.

Mythos vs Logos (the two do not actually have to be in opposition).

You know I totally respect people that can have a civil conversation about it. Nic really believes this and comes at it from place of caring about others. My brother is a christian, he gets a great deal of satisfaction out of his relationship with Jesus, he gets such joy of it that he wants me to share that feeling, that joy. So he talks to me about his faith. That I can respect. We'll never agree, because I get just as much joy and satisfaction out of my path. We still love each other and we can agree to disagree.

But others come in swinging their athiesm like a sledge hammer, talking arrogantly to others because they believe differently. Do you mean that I can be an arrogant jackass too if I embrace athieism (sp?) wow, let me rethink that!

Well I guess it depends upon ones personal realm, since 99% of the arrogant jack-asses I know would claim to be religious and/or spiritual. There is no such thing as "conversion" to atheism because it is not a belief system. It is the 'abandonment' of a previous belief system that one has found to be in error.

Interestingly, it is the belief in the supernatural (whatever form that may take) that is the foundation for every single cult, organized religion, watchtower corporation, war, etc. throughout all of recorded history.

Having said that, while I consider all forms of spirituality to be psychological anaesthesia, I recognize that we ALL get our anaesthesia in one form or another, myself included (although this usually involves a beer bottle for me rather than a bible!) Amen.....

    Little Toe,

Add two goddess worshippers to the mix! That's true spiritual paradise, my friend. That we can all come here, express vastly different worldviews and still chuckle and honor each one's individual path.

    I love it.

I consider myself to be a Spiritual Atheist.

When I use the term "spiritual" I am not referring to any sort of supernatural realm or supernatural entities... I am referring to the internal thoughts and feelings a person has.

More of a Buddhist thing, without reincarnation, deities, or any other such things.
