MrMoe - you have a great heart. It's wonderful that you thought of this. I think many of us would not be where we are if it wasn't for the help Ray's books gave.

    Hi Folks,

I think that y'all are missing something very important here. All the money in the world will not come close to compensating Ray for the good he has done with his two books and numerous appearances in behalf of Christian Freedom.

: Persons supposedly in the know have stated on this DB that RayF and Contemporary Press are one in the same.

For all you dumb dub lurkers out there, I want you to re-read the sentence above this again. Ray Franz AND Commentary Press ARE one and the same. It's a rather large Corporation actually, and Ray is having a hard time cashing and spending all the checks that he gets from his book sales. The reason this is so, is that Commentary Press' World Headquarters(tm) is located in Rays' garage! You heard me right. Whenever an order comes in to the Commentary Press Conglomorate, Ray himself will fulfill it. He does this by 1) Walking into his garage and picking the book that is ordered, 2) taking a box to put it in, 3) affixing the proper postage or calling the UPS person, and 4) going back to his coffee or whatever pleasure a man who is EIGHTY years old and who served FORTY Plus years for a religious LYING Corporation does with NO pension DOES, and hoping another order might come in that day. Yet, even today he NEVER complains.

I love Ray Franz. He has done more to expose Watchtower lies than all of we puny ants combined. He is Da Man.

I ordered a book from him about a year ago, and enclosed a letter saying how much I appreciated his work. I also explicitly stated that I knew he was busy and did NOT want him to reply to my letter. His reply came three days BEFORE the book did! First class mail. It was very loving and very poignant. I still read it for comfort when I'm depressed. I posted much of that letter on the old H20. I still get tears in my eyes about how much compassion and heart that great man has.

    'Nough said.

Do we know what Ray's financial status is? I would be glad to help if he needs it.

    Farkel,

In 1995, I started to write a manuscript for a book, entitled, The Psychology of Jehovah's Witnesses. I sent a 150 pages to Ray and asked him if the quotes I had taken from his books were appropriate. He took the time to make comments thoughout the pages and included three type written pages of further comments. I know that this had to take him considerable time. Unfortunately, I did not have the emotional stamina to complete the work, but I draw on it from time to time when I post. My main point, however, is concerning Ray, not me, and how much he gives to others. I offered this as one more testimonial to the generosity of Ray Franz.

    Larc:

I now seem to recall that YOU were the one that previously posted that RayF and Commentary Press were one in the same.

So why do you refer to sales of COC and ISOCF as generating mere "modest" "royalties"? There's a big difference between an author's royalties and retail profit.

I don't care whether purchasers of COC have them dropshipped to a friend, relative, library, or whatever. The point is that if someone wants to help RayF financially, then simply buy his books. I'll wager that if RayF were asked, he would prefer the purchase of one of his books to an outright "gift" of money. Think about it!

    MD,

    1. I never mentioned giving Ray Franz a gift.

    2. With the modest price of his books, his net profit per book is also likely to be modest. Does that suit you better?

    Moe,

Did you bother to do any research whatsoever to see what Ray Franz's financial status is before you start calling for contributions?
Or did you just get a flash in the pan flash of inspiration?

I find your posting rather perplexing in that you want to set up a fund to assist him and post absolutely NO details of his current financial situation. How do know he's not fairly well off already before you go out honking the horn for people to give?

If you want to obtain this kind of information, there are many people that know him personally and could fill you in on the details.
I would start with the 1-800-WHY-1914 helpline and go from there to find a contact that could give you the inside info on his situation.

When you get the info, please post it. I might like to donate myself.

    Mega:

Moe's well-intentioned goal is being overshadowed by a poorly conceived attainment strategy. Let's not turn this thread into an analysis of RayF's financial status, which will taint COC and ISOCF as "money generators", rather than the real non-pecuniary reason(s) for their existance.

However, something else should be added to this discussion.

Purchasing COC and ISOCF from some other source other than directly from RayF at Commentary Press (Amazon, B&N, or even some XJW retailers) means that the profits go to those people, NOT RayF.

If someone wants to "crusade" here, it should be to spread the word that all purchases of ANY BOOK SOLD BY COMMENTARY PRESS (including non-authored books such as GTR, etc.) should be done directly from Commentary Press, so that all retail profits go directly to RayF.

You jump to conclusions. Go back and reread my post. Better yet, have someone read it for you... slowly.

I simply wanted to know if Ray Franz is in need of assistance.
He may not need my money or anybody else's. Maybe he does.
If he does, I'd be happy to write him a check. Ray Franz helped me more than just writing his two books. Years ago, when I first got out, I had the privilege of talking to him personally, and he was more than happy to entertain my endless questions (which I'm sure he's heard thousands of times before) and patiently answer them and give advice. His openness and selflessness is obvious, and he wasn't afraid to answer any question; which was in direct contrast to Colin Quackenbush in the Bethel Writing Dpt whose best advice was to put my questions on a shelf and forget about them.

So does anyone know if Ray Franz is in need? Could he use a little financial assistance? I'm glad Moe posted this topic. I very definitely would like to get involved if he does.
