I for one appreciate Australia's efforts to prevent undesirables from entering their country.
I once heard the story of a British businessman, who upon arrival at Australian customs was asked if he had ever been convicted of a felony. To which the Brit replied, "No, is it still a requirement here?" I believe the customs agents detained and then strip searched the chap.
That is just a story ...... I have never heard that question being asked when standing in line behind visitors ...... nor have I heard of anyone who has been asked it .....

Your title indicates it would be those of different ethnicity than the 'Aussies.'
I'll take the USA, where our motto is "Give us your poor and tired...etc etc." From whence we continue to baffle and amaze the world with our ingenuity.
(No offense to any Aussies felt or implied.)
We're always taking in the poor and the tired. We have no ethnicity requirements. This is a nation built on immigration, and I'm proud of it as such.
Many many Aussies object to being the worlds dumping ground for it's garbage.
Be it shoddy made in China goods or people that no one wants. What can these people offer us? Do they have any skills other than producing babies?
Today the world still condemns Hitler for how he treated the Jews which no one wanted, including the Yanks. Look at what the Jews are doing to the Palestinians. No one speaks up for the East Timoreese, cause we want to do business with Indonesia. Business comes before people.
A solution must be found for these people but Australia is not it We are just a small developing country ourselves.
We may be a large country geographically but we are small in terms of our economy and in the number of people.
We cannot provide jobs for those who have been here a long time so how can we aford to feed those who invade our country unlawfully?
Australia has large areas which are uninhabited and unproductive, no one wants to live there they all crowd into the 2 major cities and create problems. Much of Australias manufacturing facilities have closed down or have been bought out by foreiners, we export our jobs.
Why on earth do we have to buy an american Machamburger is there no Aussie cabable of making a hamburger and wrapping it up in a bit of greasy paper?
We simply cannot aford all these etra mouths to feed.
Additionally these people who come here have no desire (many not all) to integrate into the Australian community. They form little Ghettos here and there which become "no go" zones for Australians.
Some ethics believe it's ok to go round in gangs and rape Australian girls. This is the same ethnic/religious mob that think it's ok to blow up as bus load of school children because Alah is going to take them straight to heaven and give them 7 virgins to play with.
No sir we Aussies reserve the right to determine who enters our country.
Do YOU leave your front door open for anyone to just march in as they want? Of cause you don't. This invasion has to stop somewhere. It's about time we had a leader who can think a little further down the track then the next election.

IMHO undesirables are those people who add no value to this country and only become a drain on our limited resources. Those who have criminal backgrounds and seek to continnue those activities here. It happens believe me it happens. The majority of people live blissfully in ignorance of what goes on in the real world. If the average Joe Blo would listen to the police radio channels they would be too afraid to leave the hous to go to work in the morning. Ignorance is bliss.
But then most JDubs already know this. The BORG relies on this to keep the R&F in harness.
For the record, I disagree with almost everything Older Tom just said; I believe in taking in refugees and immigrants, and I don't believe in trying to pick and choose the "ideal population. Allpeople contribute, and an expanding population tends to create more resources than it consumes. Older populations can learn new things from more recent settlers. The glass is half full.
How many can I send over for you to look after feed and clothe and make sure they are ready to go back home when discovered they are not refugees?

We have some of those same 'ghettos' over here. They are BIG tourist attractions. I wouldn't think of visiting San Francisco without going to Japantown or Chinatown. And when I go to LA, I head straight for the Thai area in Hollywood.

Many of these women come from lands where MEN have told them for CENTURIES that their value as a woman depends on how many children they produce. Or did you think women breed asexually? Believe you me, Tom, as soon as they have a chance at financial independence they'll be on birth control pills too.

Give it a rest, please, OT. If you choose to listen to the Bad News channel all day, I'm sure it's going to color your perspective. There are a lot of honest hearted people seeking freedom of religion and freedom of political belief. They are honest and hard working. A few bad apples don't spoil the whole bunch.
I am flattered that even with all of our problems, refugees STILL want to come here, and view this crazy mixed up kaleidoscope of people as "The Land of Opportunity."
And the corporate welfare/banking and stocks frauds perpetrated on people of this country by the likes of fine, upstanding men such as Michael Milliken make welfare fraud look like child's play. But he wears a suit and tie, so I guess since he looks respectable it's ok. We probably would have had him figured out much earlier if he had worn a daishiki and turban to work!

Do you really know what goes on in many of these ethnic communities? Whaen was the last time you walke through Bankstown or Lidcombe or Auburn or Cambramatta at night?
Have you ever listened to the police radio?
