Well, do women make good hunters then? Think of carrying all their hand-bags, make up, hair accessories, mobile phones and god knows what else into the middle of the Kalahari - no where to plug the curlers in! and some of them probably wouldn't even want to poo in a public space until they get home again!

    Ya got me there.

Have any of you been to Yosemite National Park? Ya know "El Capitan", the sheer rock face that insane people climb? My girlfriend has climbed it three times. Her ex-husband has 5 "first ascents" on that face. She slept by wedging some pitons in a rock and with some complicated device that I don't understand, swung in her sleeping bag to sleep at night.

I asked her the most critical question. "How do you CRAP if you're on the rock face for three days?" The answer? A POOP TUBE. Right then and there I knew I would never be a world class climber.

But, ahem, she climbs with men and 'bellets' them or whatever you call it. She is a STRONG climber.

I'll probably regret saying this, but I have a few observations about Mead and the Tchambuli (Chambri)

The Tchambuli were (In 1933) a small tribe with a population of ~500 in the Chambri lakes region of Papua, New Guinea. Margaret Mead spent four months with this tribe (January - April) during that year. Mead found the Tchambuli as a society to be one in which women were "unadorned, brisk and efficient in fishing, childbearing and marketing" while the men were "decorated, vain, interested in art, theater and petty gossip."

In 1935, she published a book entitled, Sex and Temperament in Three Primitive Societies which was based upon her fieldwork with the Tchambuli and two other tribes, the Arpesh and the Mundugumor. Although I think Mead was ultimately on the correct "side" socially, (e.g. A proponent of freer sex roles) both her conclusions and methods have been soundly criticized from 1936 (Terman and Miles, Sex and Personality) onward.

For example, as Deborah Gewertz and Nancy McDowell have pointed out, the "feminized" Tchambuli men were actually headhunters whose traditional "role" had been curtailed by Australian colonial rule just 7-8 years prior to Mead's work. (Gewertz, The Tchambuli View of Persons: A Critique of Individualism in the Works of Mead and Chodorow) (Similarly, the other two tribes were "broken cultures" as well.)

In fairness to Margaret Mead though, much is attributed to her today that she never said. She never claimed that gender roles had absolutely no basis in physiology. Her claim was that these roles were far more arbitrary and maleable than had been realized. Neither did she claim that Tchambuli society was an example of complete gender role reversal. She in fact, explicitly denied making that claim numerous times throughout the remainder of her career. Tchambuli females for example, certainly took care of their infants. Her claim was that the Tchambuli men and women exhibited personality traits opposite to what we in Western societies traditionally associate with men and women. As others have observed though, an "effete" headhunter is still a headhunter.

What this has to do with why more women than men seem to be JW's I have no idea....

Agree 100%. Circumstances have a way of impacting roles. Which is why, although I'm no 'world class hunter' and I've never threaded a worm on a fish hook, if it were a choice between killing an animal to feed my family or letting them starve, well--that's not even a choice.

((((TD))) I thought me an Ballistic were the only ones reading this anymore, LOL.

No sh*t! I had to leave a "deposit" on a mountain once, I kind of felt like I had contributed to it in some way easing my concience of all the environmental damage I was doing, a little piece of me left somewhere on a cold wind swept mountain.

Ballistic...have you ever been hit by one of those hand-bags...they are like weapons!!! With all that women carry in there, I'd imagine it would be deadlier than a gun!!!

ROFLMAO that's more like it - after a few days of feeling like you been on "ignore" on this web-site, there's nothing like provoking a reaction and nothing quite like the scorn of an angry woman to go with it! LOL

Speaking of hunting and handbags, a friend of my mother's (non-JW) in Washington DC always carries a gun for self protection. (Very wealthy). She was shopping at I Magnin a few years back and dropped her purse, which had the gun inside. Somehow the safety was knocked to the off position by lipstick? or somesuch.

The gun fired with a loud BANG!!!!! and it scared the bejesus out of her and everyone else in the store.

She's lucky no one got hit. She picked up her 'smoking bag' , obscuring the smoke that rose from the bullet hole and left the premises immediately.

So you see, handling a firearm improperly ISN'T just the domain of men. (Dick Cheney Class)
