In France they realised what they are really up to and slammed them hard after reports that they were breaking up families and letting children die by denying them blood in emergencies. They have to pay lots of taxes and are denied the status of religion altogether. They are labelled as a cult and they went to the European court over these issues but lost.
I heard about this. But the WT take on it was that it was "religous persecution"

They're just carrying on a long tradition of religious heirachies. From the earliest pagan cultures, including the hebrews, the priestly classes kept the community in fear of the god's wrath, which only they could placate because of their special mystical relationship. If you greased their palm and brought your best animal for sacrifice (which was subsequently their supper) they'd put in a good word for you. They held your salvation and your pocket book in their hands.

Yeah they've been having a hard time in France
That's why UK Bethel has been printing all the books & mags for them. For all the French govnmt's faults they seem to have seen through the WTS facade so kudos to them. -

It would seem that the entities with a vested interest in exactly how it would be defined, IRS, (most) Governments, etc., recognize it as a religion.
And you know what? So do most people. Get over it. The WTS is wealthy no doubt, so are many religions, but it certainly isn't a "commercial enterprise." If it were, it would be even richer.

It's a business cleverly disguised as a religion. Even those who recognize it as a religion also recognize that it's most prominent characteristic is, not it's doctrines, but it's publishing of literature, and the immensity of it's sales force.
It is also noted that, unlike other organized religions, the Watchtower Society gives absolutely nothing back to the community. No food pantrys, no donation boxes for the poor, no shelters for battered women or children, no sleeping bags for the homeless. They don't even help their own members, unless the members are popular, or unless the society can gain media attention from their effort. Even when giving a magazine to a homeless person, many will still ask for a donation.
The Jehovahs Witnesses contribute nothing of value to mankind. They are the most valueless people I've ever encountered.

The deadbeat Watchtower corporation pays no municipal taxes on their buildings, without even one charity to compensate the community. [ Think! A corporation whose ultimate goal is to maximize profits will run differently than one whose goal is to maximize market share. Purity of motives aside, the WBTS is the latter.
