They have as usually twisted the meaning of the verse and misapplied it in a gross manner.
John there is talking about the gnostics who were denying that Jesus had come and suffered in the flesh. In addition it mentions there the teaching of christ and the JWs certainly don't have this teaching they have the WTS teaching that is forever changing.
And finally if they are to apply that verse strictly they might as well not talk to anyone that doesn't accept their teachings that is all the non JWs.
I am the Antichrist!!! ... oh... and so are you!

Good point greenday. The scripture does not strictly speak of someone leaving the group of Christians, but anyone not professing faith in Jesus, which is basically 3/4 of the global population.

Back in those days there were the prophets in the Christian Church that used to travel and teach the churches and their rank was next after the apostles.
I think John had in mind gnostic individuals that tried to present themselves as genuine prophets in order to mislead the churches with their doctrine that Jesus never came in the flesh (they believed that all matter was evil)and John was warning against accepting these in their houses. Their teachings were so hostile and subversive of the apostolic ones that they should be kept at a safe distance.
He was talking about a specific class that existed in his day.
