Milwaukee eh? I lived in Minneapolis for a while, then my wife and I moved back to the Ozarks. I hear good things about the trout fishing in the Wisconsin area.

It was probably in the early 90's that my son and several of the local kids from the KH were really into rock climbing and many of them were kids of Elders™. I don't remember any discouragement of it in our local congregation back then, we even let him camp over night unsupervised! Those were some of his funnest times I'm glad he got to do it.

We lived very close to one of the most traveled to world renown rock climbing areas and I used to go and watch the climbers I thought it was pretty awesome and was totally in awe of their abilities to climb the most impossible looking stuff. We used to time them and give the climbers a report of how fast they made the climbs once they came down, they liked that and got very competitive about it always trying to outdo each others times. Or maybe it was just showing off? LOL

My son spent a lot of money on his climbing gear and there were several shops in nearby towns that had all a climber could want and more including lessons and over night camping trips with instructions. He took some of these classes and I was really glad when he got expert instructions.

They used to do face climbing without gear other than chalk, climbing shoes and taped up finger tips! He used to brag about his callouses and said he should have started climbing to get them faster so he could play guitar without such pain, funny kid.

I loved watching them using counter weighted rappels, I always wanted to try rappelling down but the climbing up.....no way!

Anyway I guess a lot has changed in the B'org since then. I thought it was a great sport and taught self discipline. My son said he like that he had to always think about every move and learned to concentrate on the task because one error could be deadly for you or your partner. Trust was also something he said some people he wouldn't trust as well as others.

Bottom line is it teaches one to THINK and be self reliant, we know what the WTS thinks about that!

there are plenty of good places for trout fishing is wisconsin, even in milwaukee. racine has the root river, not the cleanest river but the trout run up it to spawn every year. milwaukee has the menomonee river that goes through the city. its sort of a sewer run off that connects to lake michigan. its mostly concrete so when it rains a lot its very full and the fish go up to the surface where you can almost grap them by hand, suckers, trout, northern...

I used to be really really into it in NY but it's sorta hard to stay with it here in florida! On the other had I have had some fun getting way way way over weighted and diving into a sink and trying to climb out with no fins! Thats actually a lot of fun and more than a bit creepy!

I had a couple bad falls and things while living in NY. Hospital couple times once overnight. The elders never had much to say to me though. I guess they knew that I didn't give a crap what they thought!

I heard an interview from the guy the hosts the Amazing Race this week. He was asked about the danger of the things they have to do. He said that the most dangerous thing the contestants do is ride in the taxis. When asked about Bungee jumping he said anyone that says it is dangerous has never looked at the statistics. Bungee jumping is a controlled sport that is very safe.

It all comes back to control by guilt over anything a JW has to do. Such an overbearing religion being out of it is such a relief.

rock climbing is a great sport. back then people didn't know what it realy was, they thought that it was like hiking up a steep mountain. now a days elders see it in rated R movies that they aren't supposed to be watching anyway and think that its dangerous and a good excuse to tell people what not to do. funny that even now there isn't a direct quote in the W&A that says rock climbing should not be done. its just the peer pressure of other witnesses that bans it. JW's suck!!!

Alaska has about 6 months of sticking it where the sun don't shine, right?

LOL!! Well maybe not that long,ha ha!! Above the arctic circle it would be, but I'm a bit below that.In the darkest part of the year, winter solstice,we have maybe 3 hours of daylight, great for watching the northern lights. But in the summertime it's hella cool with bearly 3 hours of darkness and it never really get's dark enough to see the stars. It's the Home of the Midnight Sun!
