My conversation with Richie's Dad

Is Richie's father a JW? If not, then why would Richie's father care about congregation matters? Unless the elders are threatening to press charges against Richie for taking the book, then Richie's father might have a reason to be upset with people online for encouraging the behavior because a church pressing a criminal charge against his son would be embarrassing the father.

'hey its karl from school, i thought you were calling me tonight. its ok if you forgot or something. i will ring later'

Red flags just went up, Americans NEVER refer to a telephone call as "ringing" someone.

the dad may be upset and justifiably concerned about richie having people he's met on the internet offering him places to stay and offering him money and calling his phone.. it may not be a jw issue at all to the dad. i'd be concerned if people off the internet were calling my 17 yr old son and offering him stuff.

    Candy...That is an excellent point!

Red flags went up, orange lights came on and a siren sounded.

i know, i'd of said calling...that was an 'example' lol. i'm not doing it anyhow, cos its clear its best to wait for him to appear here.

Thanks all, Candy, I didn't think of it that way, you're right, if I was the dad I would be scared if my kid were getting calls from people online. I won't be calling again. I just wanted to encourage him, make sure he was okay. Guess all we can do for now is keep Richie in our thoughts and prayers.

hmmm Why would anyone lie about how they know Richie? (I know the OP was taken by surprise & others were joking. I get that. But some seem to have been serious.)

Richie's dad is probably wondering why a bunch of strangers--adults to boot--are calling his minor son....seems like a valid concern to me and I'd do the same thing if I was him. For all he knows, his son could have accidentally talked to a pedophile & he wants to find out if his son is safe. In fact, if it was an adult friend or relative of mine getting barraged by calls from stranger, be sure as hell I'd be really concerned. Add to that the fact that some messages are offering a place to live or cash. At face value, it would cause concern on the part of any parent.

Why would we (not anyone in particular, just a collective "we") want to live up to the label JWs put upon us--big liars?

His dad is not a JW. I imagine it would be fine to just say you met on the internet, but even if you mentioned the specific site, it's doesn't seem it could make much difference at this point. JMHO

For one thing, RR is 6' 5" and weighs 250 lbs...kind of doubt they are worried about child molesters!

It just seems they have grounded him and taken away all forms of communication for the time being. Unless anyone here wants to be outed, then I see why they might not want to give their names or where they know him from to the dad. At this point we really don't know how the dad is reacting to all of this.
