I thought of all the money I saved on not buying all the meeting clothes for my family, and it got me wondering about the reason why JW,s need to dress up for everything they do.

I think it must have all started because Russell had that clothing store and this was a good way for him to have a cornered market.

First of all, I wouldn't say that JW's are "best dressed". They endeavor to wear something that has a resemblance to "good" clothing, but often is extremely cheap and poorly made. I'm sure some can afford good things, but many can't. A good number of the women wear long skirts, sensible shoes and concealing sweaters ...very practical and all that rot but hardly fashionable or what would be considered well dressed.

    luna2 ,

your right I should have said formally dressed

wasn't it irritating though and nonsensical to wear a suit and tie or dress to someones home for a book study.

    $$$$Russell$$$$ and clothing any conection?????

    I think total opposite.....

I am speaking of my Hall. Nothing was nice, very tacky barn yard looking. It's not because it was cheap, it was dirty and worn out. Also, most of these people that dressed like that had "More Money than God". They could afford decent clothes.

not best dressed...............when I was in my suits were J C Penney.

Now I buy fewer ....those kinds of clothes.....but they are better than that.

Oh now, here is a touchy subject for me. :) My clothing was mostly from places like Maurice's, so rather up-to-date and sometimes even trendy. I just couldn't do the acceptable "Goodwill Couture" that is quite prevalent in my KH. (always seemed to be a contest to see just how cheap one could get clothing). I was spoken to so many times that I lost count. Slits too high, sweaters too low, tops too tight... one sister even put her finger through my crochet mini-sweater (over a spaghetti) to touch my arm and said "oh! It IS skin right there!"... Anyway, for what it's worth, my clothing did cost probably more than those shopping the garage sales and similar, but I was probably one of the better-dressed.

'Tis Sunday morning -- I'm among the best-dressed right now -- wife beater and boxers... ahhh.... it's nice being DA'd.

From what I remember Russell sold all his clothes stores and used the capital so acquired to set up the watchtower society so he had no clothes to sell to the dubs or bible students as they were then known.

As for the male JWs wearing suits, that's to create a good image about the company they work for when they go out to sell its products without a demand to get paid for their time input. Any company wants its reps to dress up nicely.

I bought a nicer suit for my high school's speech and debate team than I did for going to the meetings. Everyone at the KH was usually dressed fairly well. Most people didn't dress as formally for the bookstudies, though; it was just khakhis and a sweater for me, usually.
I think a connection between Russel's clothing store and the witnesses love of dressing nice would be tenuous at best. I find it much more likely to be because they want to show "The World" that they are better or holier or whatever in the presence of god, just so people will have a little bit of respect for them because they can tie a double windsor or something.
