CORPORATE IMAGE—I think this is mainly the reason why WTS requires its members to dress nicely all the time. Charles Russell was a magazines/books publisher. He strategically set out to target the religious market which must have been a growing market at that time. To ensure market stability, he aimed for slow but steady growing market. So he built his own religious organization whose members became the “captive market” for his company’s publications…very slick huh? (Of course,

I don't know about the rest of the world but here on the east coast JW,s like to show off their threads maybe I'm in a more affluent area. anyhoooo Think of the weddings I've been to "wordly weddings"
and none of them compare to the witness weddings.
Oh yeah the thing of coming into Jah's presence at a meeting and being decked out is BS,
should you throw on the meeting clothes every time you say a prayer ?

I've seen situations where pubs were confronted about anything that could be interpreted as a "showy display of ones means of life". Clothes, cars, jewelry, etc. This was a nice catch-all scripture for the envious under-acheivers of which there was always an abundance. There seemed to be a reverse snob factor. Those with cars & clothes that looked the cheapest actually had more status. Of course, when their old jalopy need work, they were more than happy to take advantage of the poor auto mechanic brothers free work. The old saying "Small people have small ways" held true.

Yeah, I've never seen anybody in a suite before. Expect right across the river in downtown Manhatten.
The Watchtower movement needs these things to boost the membership into thinking that they are something special, that can't be found anywhere else. Of course, the Bible dosn't say that Gods people would be the best dressed, but it makes for some pretty good PR! -

When I was small, Mom sewed my clothes, and I was very embarassed in them, because you could tell. Later on, when we got a KMart, I could pick out some tops and skirts from clearance. Winter coats were always a battle. I could never have anything in style because I had to shop clearance, and get a coat fit for the north pole, lol. It had to be warm enough for hours of service.
It always burnt my butt to drag on panty hose and a dress on a hot summer evening, just to go to somebody's house for bookstudy. Why did that require formal wear? If it was to please Jehoopla, was he displeased when I got home and put shorts back on?
It's ridiculous to think God is impressed with the clothing that humans put on. So, I guess it's a morale booster to the Witless sales staff and to wow the public. In poor neighborhoods, it used to scare the illegals and the welfare frauds into closing their doors tight and peeking out the curtains till the men in dark suits had driven away!! They thought it was the government coming to check on them!
I think the suits really put people off at the doors. If the Witlesses dressed more casual, it might open more doors to them. They do stand out, but not in a good way. The suits look sinister and unfriendly.

It stems from a particular psychosocial group construct of what is "good" - at any one time it appears to parallel what the current older-pompus-whitefolk opinion of "good appearance" is - to the point that at one time "being white" was even a reasonable foundation for the fashion of "goodness" (see the story about the jw black man who became whiter!).
There are advantages - you may determine that people currently with beards etc. are probably more trustworthy.
