Skin care for the maturing lady (fluff)

I have been using the same facial moisturiser loyally for the last 17 years - but I'm thinking what was great for me at 14 might not be so effective at 31. What most irks me when I look in the mirror (neck up early - we simply don't have long enough for what irks me below the neck) is that my pores seem really big and the overall effect is to make me look tired as the security guard at work pointed out when I left work last night!

My question is to you ladies (and cosmetically aware gents) is what is your skin care regime and do I have to switch to a really expensive brand sponsored by Nazi sympathisers and advertised by supermodels to spruce up my skin? What do you swear by?

I bath in mud every Friday and have a small Thai woman I found in a personals column come round to walk up and down my body afterwards. Sorry - couldn't resist! I really have no idea about skin care.

Models drink lots of water - 2 litres. You need to excercise enough to make your face red as this brings nutrient rich blood to the skin capillaries. Ensure you have a good diet. Stress adds wrinkles to your skin. I always looked much younger than my slightly older brother. He is really relaxed about everything nothing stresses him. Today we are in our 30s and the tables have turned - he looks much younger than me. So do all this and you can do without those creams.

Go to www.healthspan.co.uk. There you will find their factor 30 day face cream. Also their Nurture range of night eye and face creams. Their hand cream is fantastic! Their Nurture Skin Vitamins rivals the most expensive in the shops and all at a FRACTION of the price. I think they are fantastic BUT each to their own.

I'd say give their products a try Crumpet. I promise the prices do not require a new mortgage and you do see an improvement in skin quality.

At early 40's I was only just beginning to get a tiny line under one eye. Barely there now!

Oh! Plenty of Water...No coffee, only two cups of tea a day and try to get at least 8 hours sleep a day.

Im in my middle forties and dont have any wrinkles yet, a few fine lines by my eyes! But I think its in the genes.

I always use a good moisturiser, I NEVER wash my face with soap, just cleansing lotion , then a toner then moisturiser.

    I just think im lucky

Well what lovely suggestions ballistic - not sure my budget runs to a thai girl - maybe we can share?

Spectrum - my life has been one big stress so its a bit late to avoid that - but I do always drink between 2 and 4 litres of water a day. I probably don't exercise nearly enough buit I do walk at least 3 miles to and from work each day. My diet could be better although I generally get my five fruit and veg a day. I'm a little less devout at the weekend!

Vitty - I always said you looked years younger - maybe its the climate! What does toner actually do? I do have some but not realIy sure what it does. I don't tend to use soap either. I don't wear make up except if its a special ocassion - so thats maybe twice a year then!

Gill - thank you, I knew you'd reply! And you've health advice has not been amiss in the past!

    Thanks guys!

Well, I am 31 as well and this is what I've found:

Started using this Aveeno soy based cleanser and the soy based cream and so far so good. Don't know if you get that stuff in the UK, but it's something I get at the local CVS which in American lingo is basically a pharmacy that also sells cosmetics like L'Oreal, Revlon and the like.

    excellent fluff thread Crumpy!

the first position i took when working in London back in 02 was with Estee Lauder who also do Tommy Hillfiger, Donna Karan, Prescriptives, Clinique, Mac...amongst others...the truth is that of all the people that worked there they couldn't stand by any of the products, just basically said they were overpriced, and some of them do more harm than good...so i'd say that expensive namebrand stuff isn't always the way to go...

better to try improving your skin through your lifestyle as suggested above (something i myself absolutely have to do!) and also through more natural, less synthetic products :) x...anyway you got nothing to worry about cos you're a natural beauty x

to add to the above - exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!! so important. You can do this cheaply at home using ordinary table sugar mixed with water. Massage into face in a circular motion for about 2 minutes, three times a week. Rinse well! And...can't believe noone has mentioned this yet, but always, always wear sunscreen!! Even on cloudy days. You need the kind that protects you from UVA and UVB rays. (UVA causes sunburn. UVB causes the dreaded wrinkle!)

You should tone after your have used cleansing lotion. It takes away the excess oil and balances your skin, and you should use it.

    Cleanse

    Tone

moisturise Which should include a sp factor especially if you dont were makeup
