What was your greatest turn of luck in life, finding a treasure or winning the lotterry, a great spouse, a good teacher or something else? For me it was investing in a flat that saw a big increase in its value in two years.

    Two things come to mind:

The podunk little school district I was in decided to buy a computer for the high school, send a math teacher to programming class over the summer so she could teach a programming class. Though I had no real interest in computers, I took the class. I LOVED it, decided I wanted to be a programmer and the rest is history. I'm no longer a programmer, but still work in software development and make way more money than I even dreamed of.

The second serendipitous event is my unplanned pregnancy. I would have never planned to have a child 'in this system', and it would have been a shame to go down that route. However, life is what happens when you're making other plans. Being a mother has been the best life-changing experience and has made me a better person. It's also been therepeutic in my recovery from abusive parents.

Like you Seren, I allowed my three oldest children to pool their Alaska dividend checks and buy an Apple II back in the early 90's. They were the only kids in our little town to have their own computers. They are all now very successful at their professions all using computers to support their lifestyles. The real "return on investment" for me is one son is including me in on his business which will allow for me to retire comfortably whenevere I so choose. The best investment of all though was a class I took on "propaganda" which opened my eyes to what was happening to me as a youthful UU. Started me to question everything and led to my escape from the Borg!

I think my greatest (besides being disfellowshipped) was meeting my future husband. He treats me very well, loves my kids from my previous marriage, and loves me for who I am.

When I said to a friend, in response to the question ...

"what would be the one thing to make you stop believing the religion?"

    I responded

"If they changed their understanding on the generations topic."

This happened in the summer of 1995

October Watchtower changed the thinking. I doubted from their, and although it took a couple years to fully exit. I exited that summer mentally, and it taught me that life often prepares us for things in the most amazing ways.

I think getting a computer when I was little - loved it, learnt it and have been paid for programming 'em ever since.

Also, getting fired (unfairly) from an average job. It forced me to improve my skills and not coast and start contracting. I now earn 5x what I did then (~10 years ago). Don't assume that current bad news is always bad news in the long run. It may just be an opportunity.
